This is the one I have settled on... nothing has gone wrong with it since I got it, and I've been using it heavily! At first I was wishing it had a DVD+-RW, but then I thought, hey, why? I got an external one, and my Dell Dimension will run that little guy. Can't imagine needing to burn DVD's away from home. Also, if something went wrong with it, I don't have to be without my computer while it gets fixed.
I can't find anything I do not like about this little notebook... nothing... EXCEPT the right hand *SHIFT* key is too darn small and I keep hitting another key which throws what I am doing all out of whack on the screen... LOL... So, other than that... wow! It is a complete JOY to use. Also love the small size, portability being *the* reason I wanted a notebook.
I think I will stick to this size for my portable pc. I have found so many different little packs to carry it around in, from serious-looking and beautiful, padded leather briefcase type ones, to common looking purses that are perfect for this size. I am totally in love with notebooks!!
Haven't watched any DVD's on it they V505EX, but plan to give that a shot. I really didn't get it for that purpose, but now I can imagine all kinds of reasons why that could be fun and useful.
There is NO fan noise!!! I never ever hear it, even after hours of use. And it doesn't get warm, either. I do still hear the "HDis working" noises... the same noises I heard on the first Sony notebook I ordered (GRT 270 from Sonystyle), so much so that I thoughtit was cause to worry, and so I sent it back!! WAHHH Several techs I whined to about it said my HD should NOT be making noises like that. So it went back, but now this little one is doing the same thing. Guess its ok, just normal noises, and guess the beautiful GRT270 wasn't meant to be my notebook. It *was* a little big for my original intentions... but boy, was it awesome!!

Boo, I'm really glad you're happy and hope you stick around to help others make buying decisions. Andrew recently posted his review of the 505 and he generally liked it. The main shortcomings if I remember were the non-removable optical drive and a touchpad that was absolutely terrible. Are you having any issues with the touchpad?

Boo, I agree that the size of the V505E is the way to go with laptops, especially if you already have a desktop. The V505 is obviously a lot lighter than the GRT and it's just kind of nice to have such a light yet usable tool at your disposal. Glad you like the V505, my only gripe was I felt the depth was a little too much design wise and I had problems with the touchpad.

I have a VAIO PCG-V505ACP. By now it has become obvious that 1) the touchpad is a problem (mine definitely is); and 2) Sony doesn't seem to have a solid and reliable fix for it - not even afer almost two years of complaints.
I've read in other forums of some home-made fixes. Does anyone here have some suggestions on how to fix the problem of the wayward cursor? Some have described placing a very thin surface between the laptop's body and the pad, but how do I open that part of the laptop to get at the touchpad? I have opened the Vaio before to insert RAM and clean the keyboard but the front ares where the touchpad recides is accesible through some other way. Any one know how?
Thank you in advance
Ozzie
I love Sony's V505EX
