It depends...what are your priorities? Portability? A big screen (I know a lot of programmers like to fit a lot of "stuff" on their screen)?

The S170 is great for gaming as far as a laptop goes, and it's lightweight. But it has a smallish screen (13.3 widescreen), which may or may not suit your programming needs.

    It's a great machine.

I'd agree with magic168. The screen res is only 1280x800 and sometimes even the constant scrolling through webpages or documents can be a pain.

Another issue is the fan noise, not noticeable is an office but at home in the evenings when ambient noise it low it is very noticeable. This is my 1st laptop so can't compare with other makes but every forum I have visitied has some S series user complaining about the noise.

I'm not a developer but if you don't need a quiet environment to think and don't mind doing a lot of scrolling then its a good laptop.
