I am looking for a light, portable and good quality laptop. After searching on Internet, I recently purchased an Asus UL30 and returned it right away because of the very poor quality.

Then I turned back to Sony (I already have one, old, perfectly working still) and I decided to buy a Sony Vaio VPCY11S1E which is a little faster than the Vaio VPCY21S1E.

Light, battery lasts around 7 hrs, great keyboard and touch-pad (which I value as I type a lot) but something worries me.
I read in reviews that when on battery the display are dimmed automatic and there is not option for the user to set it higher. How dimmed...I cannot figure out only from the numbers I read on the review.

Anyway, I find this rather strange, portability means often taking the machine outside where is a lot of light and you need to set the display at its highest brightness. Same stands for watching the movie, when you need the display to be very bright. This would be a real turn off for me, what is the use of long battery life if you have to struggle to see the display?

I wonder if anybody here owning this laptop found the display rather dull on battery or had problem with the disply.

And an additional question, as I am not good in computers, what is the difference between ony Vaio VPCY11S1 E and ony Vaio VPCY11S1 E/S?

    thank you!

    Hi,

About the dim screen you can read this thread (about the vaio Z but it might be close to the Y on this point)

And the "/S", in this case, mean "silver" and relate the color of the product.

Thank you for the link, I read it.

Though, I would like to hear from Y-owners about their display.

    Hi,

I also heard great things about it, that is why I bought it in the first place. Then I regretted so much not staying in the Sony range.

Let`s see, where should I start - the one that I bought it had a very noisy cheap keyboard, a very very very bad touch pad (not responsive), a terrible display in horizontal view, only a little bit tilted and the image was gone. The only thing good about it was the long battery life but this cannot make up for the rest of disadvantages.

oh i see, my sister has the ul20a, and i also didn't like the touchpad (i believe it's the same on the ul30), it had all these bumps on it, and the texture was uncomfortable, i guess it's made of the same material as the palm rest since it blends right in

Yes, a completely crasy stupid frustrating touchpad, you cannot work with it, you need an external mouse.

I will never buy an Asus.
