HI. I'm new to this forum. I came across it when searching the web and I need help. Sorry if this already has a thread but I want help specifically for my laptop because I'm computer illiterate and I have no idea how to go about this.

Basically, which of these are safe to uninstall from my sony vaio laptop?
The model is VPCEB2C5E - from the e series

Just got my customised sony vaio laptop yesterday but it came loaded with all this bloatware. At the moment my laptop is running around 97 processes on windows 7 OS without any windows open - just from background tasks. There are all these processes but I don't know how to get rid of them and which I'm not supposed to touch. In comparison, my computer desktop which runs vista runs only 57 processes at startup.

Also, straight after start up without any windows open, the laptop uses 1.39 gb of RAM out of the 4 gigs I have. That's just too high right? I've even msconfig the start up and disabled things likes adobe reader and java but still it makes no difference.

If possible can someone with knowledge about these things help me by telling me which of the below are safe to uninstall? And if no one is sure, would you recommend me contacting sony themselves? - but then again, they're the ones who filled the laptop with all this junk.

In my control panel it says I have 74 progammes installed. I can't copy and paste my progamme list but I can name a few I want removed but I don't know if I can.

    Evernote
    Vaio Media Plus (Sony)
PMB applications (Sony story or something)
Roxio easy media creator 10 LJ
    Sony Home Network Library
    Vaio movie story template data
    Vaio Premium Partners

Are all the above safe to remove?

Also, I want to know what the Vaio Smart Network is - so that I can decide If I need it. Does the Vaio gate use a lot of RAM and will it help if I get rid of it? (the sony dock which loads at start up).

Is the vaio care connected to the 'assist' button. I want to be able to use this buttons alongside the 'web' button.

Will removing these stuff decrease the number of processes? I've already removed the norton back up free trial and musicstation.

    Thanks.

The programs you list are all safe to uninstall if you don't want to use them.

VAIO Smart network lets you switch the wifi and bluetooth on and off individually, rather than using the switch on the front of the laptop to turn them both on and off. It also manages wifi profiles, in case you want different settings for using it in different places.

Yes, the assist button launches VAIO care.

Honestly, the easiest way is to start from a blank slate then only add what you want, rather than trying to clean up all the bloat. Easiest way to do it is this:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/sony/146033-how-optimize-any-sony-vaio-semi-clean-install.html (replace launcher.exe with VAIORecv.exe in step 5)

I'd suggest deciding which of the VAIO software you actually want, then adding it after the clean install.

Are you noticing any problems with how the system is performing? It may seem like overkill to have 1.39 GB of RAM used up when you're just sitting there idling, but I wouldn't expect that to be affecting performance. I would say that all of the programs you listed are fine to remove. But I think the main benefit to removing those programs is going to be freeing up hard drive space, not improving system performance.

I guess what I'm trying to say is I wouldn't worry about your RAM there. If those programs aren't taxing your CPU like crazy, then I don't think they are going to be killing your overall performance.

Try here for advice on doing a semi clean install:

I used the information to help decide what was safe to remove.

Also, if you want to be even more cautious and not remove many things, just press the windows button and type MSCONFIG

In Startup and Services tabs you can disable any program that you're curious about and see what happens.

I disabled ALL of the Sony Media/Entertainment packages, as well as Sony PMB and Metadata/Metacontent progrmas (which are used in conjunction w/ PMB). I disabled a bunch more things after trial and error. Like the Adobe and iTunes items that like to run in the background. Give it a try and see what happens.

I went from 46% RAM usage while idling after startup down to 28-30%

I don't notice any problems. The CPUs fine. It's just that when I play games like sims 2, it runs smooth and fast but the RAM usage rockets higher - and I'm not confident enough to end background tasks incase I disable something important to the system.

Thanks for the help. I'll try disabling PMB and the Media stuff - it's all unnecassary really. I mean how many media programmes do I need? - only one.

If you're not noticing any problems running applications, then I wouldn't worry about the RAM "rocketing" higher. The programs that most mainstream users are using will be fine with 4 GB of RAM, that includes games. But that being said, I agree with you when you say "how many media programs do I need." If removing those programs makes you feel better about the machine's "streamline-ness," go for it. But it doesn't sound like your machine is starving for resources because of those bloatware programs.
