The new i3/i5/i7s uses a different platform and don't support the GM45 chipset.

Totally different platform and chipset. Its like asking if they will eventually support diesel fuel in gasoline engines.

The best you can do with the current (old) Z is a C2D T9900, which is found on the high-end 4th and 5th gen Z. I've scoured the net for it but it ain't easy to find.

Though I doubt you will notice alot of performace difference. The T9900 is infamous for downclocking for 99% of the time. That is, it goes at full blast with a clock speed of 3.06GHz in 10 second or so bursts, then downclocks and idles at approx 2.4GHz (my memory maybe off, but that is the approx figures that I remember). With that said, you can consider a P9700 which runs at 2.8GHz, and I understand that doesn't downclock at all. Plus, the P series (if I remember correctly again) uses less power compared to the T series. Additionally, I did ask a few weeks back regarding a CPU mod here, and the T and P series use different materials in the heat-sink structure? The T has copper and P something else...?

If you are looking for performance increases in games or stuff, which btw I don't recommend on the Z due to it's rather ineffective heat managing capabilities, you should save up for a SSD. CPU upgrades tend to be for people who do programming (think Visual Studio, Matlab, and the rest.).

And I guarantee you now, the new Z with i7; the early buyers will regret it with heat issues and what not, unless Sony has somehow miraculously solved the heat woes on the new Z. But I wouldn't count on that because images show that the internal structure of the new and old Z are pretty much the same. I'll be VERY surprised if I don't hear heat complaints within the first week of the new Z selling. I mean, I was pretty much dumb-struck when I first read that the new Z will come with an i5 and 330m... I'll be waiting for the new Z's hands-on user reviews with anticipation.
