    On the Sony update page for my VGN-FS850, there is a new (8/9/06) fix:

    Sony states, "This utility updates the IntelĀ® PRO/Wireless Network Connection Driver to address a security vulnerability."

    However...it goes on to state:

    "However, some parts of the pre-installed VAIO Wireless Switching Utility may no longer function properly after installing the update. Sony is working to provide an update to the Wireless Switching Utility that will restore full functionality. Please check your model update page periodically for new updates."

    ============================================================
    Has anyone installed this fix, and if so---what "no longer functions properly"?

    I'm not installing this until I hear from someone who has.

    Sincerely,
    Stan

    I installed it last night on my SZ but haven't had a chance to see what is not working as it was late. I think they are saying the switch that enables and disables wireless won't work after install but the description was so brief I wasn't clear. I did the install anyway as I never disable wireless on my notebook. The one thing I did notice after the update was the wireless seemed to have a stronger signal. I saw more AP's in the Intel wireless profile, neighbor's etc...

    Is this the same issue as the one that was mentioned about 2 weeks ago, with the new driver version 10.5.1.57 being installed on your computer?

    Sony and intel don't make it very easy to find info. I kept getting the run around on the intel site, when all i wanted was the driver. I can't seem to find that option, all i could find was the option to install the proset program as well which i definitely don't want

    I installed the update and everything works fine here. I use SmartWi instead of the VAIO Wireless Switching Utility so that notice is meaningless to me.

    I think this is about the recent wireless card exploit at the Black Hat hacking conference.

    Some people there showed how to hack a wireless card and gain access to the laptop through faulty device drivers. Since wireless cards are constantly sniffing for new networks, this introduces some security vulnerabilities.
