How do I get rid of that icon bar at the bottom of the screen that resembles the icon bar they have on the Macs?

To disable mode switch totally as well as remove the icon bar:

    start-> search: msconfig

    open

    startup tab

    disable VAIO mode switch

    apply and restart

Actually you have to be careful with free software.
I found a free firewall which included spyware...

CCleaner is Ok, I use it too.

For "computer defense" I recommend Kaspersky.

Oh and Wisecleaner is quite handy.

With registry clean-ups, some software doesn't like it. I know that HP scansoftware under XP completely ceased to work after a registry cleanup.
    Reinstalling didn't work either...

(I mean is it that difficult to programme decent software?)

Just out of curiosity... why would you disable something that the SR was designed to include? It doesnt take up any(or much) system resources, as far as i know, and makes my life alot easier...

Well, if one thing eats up a little power your not bothered, but consider 10 things doing the same and you'll see a quite drastic change.

Also, the laptop was meant to use it, but you may not want it.

I'm not using the side bar in Vista, my SZ could handle it though, I just don't want it.
SOmeone here in the forum mentioned that he runs Vista in a Windows 95 look, he says it looks neater, uses less resources (true) and teakes less desktop space.
    Everybody has his own preferences.
Are you using a Vaio background? If yes may I ask why you don't use it, as the laptop was intended to use it.
Does that make any sense to you? Personal preferences!!!

Also, because some guy behind some screen somewhere in the world thinks having this and that is a good idea it doesn't mean you have to like or use it.
