Now before someone shouts out, "wth, there isn't any comparison between the two"
After all one is a spanking hot $2000 worth piece of art, the other is a basic, bare bones machine and the only similarity between the two is the small size and weight

Here is why I am confused...
I am trying to sell off my existing main laptop (XPS M1210 - C2D + Go 7400) and get the Vaio TZ as a replacement

else, I can retain the XPS and get a EEE 900 (the new 8.9" machine)
and let's not forget that I can get 4-5 of the EEEs for the price of a single TZ

So do I save the moolah and live with two machines, one powerful albeit heavy, the other light & small though weak

Or do I bite the bullet and get the TZ ( I must admit that it's the gem of a screen on the TZ that is temting me the most)

    what would you do?

How much battery time do you want?

What applications do you want to be able to use while on the move?

In my mind they do compare. Both nice ultraportables for short work.

I might opt for 10" MSI Wind or 12" Dell E slim. 9" is just too small.

To tell you the truth, an easy to carry machine with 3 hrs of battery life and capable of running firefox / word processor /spreadsheet is more than adequate for me while on the move

What is keeping me confused is whether paying an additional $1200 (rather $1200 - $600 = $600 which I should get for the XPS) worth the better screen and looks on the TZ

I think the MSI Wind would be a good fit for you, has a 10" LED backlit screen which I hear is quite good in quality. Its a really good alternative to the EEE series especially as their prices keep going up.

This thread is probably a joke. You would not be on a Rolls Royce forum asking why would you buy FIAT would you?

Anyhow..in europe there are a few TZs that are close to 1000 € if you find a good deal, since sometimes there is model that comes out there for a pure reason of cleaning warehoues...that are a very good deals, never mind tha factor that is still almost 3 times the asus eee price.

I like your idea of the EEE or the Wind. In fact you could probably buy a new, larger laptop -- and one of the little guys -- for less than the TZ.

Funny, I had originally planned on buying a 13" laptop to replace my 12" laptop. Now I'm actually wondering if I might be better suited with a larger 15.4 - 17" laptop for home (I work from home) and a little EEE or Wind for the rare times I need to be mobile.

Man, only $479 at Amazon for the Wind. Tempting... very tempting... :)

Yep or a Wind and a desktop.

Bit of a crooked comparison because the Rolls Royce needs a lot of gas is huge and very heavy.

    10" vs. 11"
    1.2 kg vs. 1.2kg
    Atom vs. ULV C2D

The difference is not that big in my opinion, especially if you buy a 6 cell for the MSI.

By the way the Wind has a much faster harddrive then the default TZ has.

Well..Atom is not "that good" and TZ have C2D cpu...true its a ULV but it does the job.

And...TZ is made of carbon and have probably the best LCD screens out there. Just the LCD panel itself costs more than whole EEE, not to mention carbon vs plastic.

Anyhow..do as the fellow earlier said, but two laptops...I have asus 701, but I just use it as car navigation and to access emails/internet when I am on the road. For anything else its pretty useless...Wind might be a bit more usefull, but I find this laptops rather a "toys" than a serious laptops...unless you have a big money issues...

true, C2D is a bit better.

But the lower TZs have 1.06Ghz. Enough for surfing, playing music and Word. Just like the Wind. The Wind has a faster harddrive.

The 701 is more a toy I agree. The Wind is a lot more computer than the 701 though.

I agree... I hope to get my hands on MSI Wind next week (when they are planned to get released) and then I will be able to evaluate it vs TZ or vs 701.

If you remind me, I will share my experience ;)

Believe it or not, I've found that an iPhone does the job nicely (for me).

We went on a vacation recently, and I didn't have to access my laptop once (it stayed in the hotel room). I used the iPhone for email and web.

Not exactly the same as an ultra-portable laptop, I realize... but for some, the iPhone is good enough -- and it fits in your pocket. :)

I was actually thinking about the pocket PC, like Glofish, but they are priced higher than eee...

and with eee..at least a person can type normal, which is a big deal if you type long emails :)

The Asus EEE and MSI Wind are good low budget netbooks.

I bought a 10.6 notebook for someone recently and they would not have appreciated one of these netbooks because they wanted a built in DVD drive and fingerprint reader. Along with these two things the TZ also has some other going for it.
The TZ is really quite expensive though and if i was interested in buying one of these i would never buy one from a retail store i would look elsewhere to buy one.

To me most of the netbooks look pretty much like how much they cost. The MSI Wind looks cheap to me and so does the Asus EEE. The TZ though that is another matter.

The analogy really isn't fair..is it?
the quantum of difference between a RR and a FIAT is far more than between a TZ and Wind/EEE

Also, the comparison is more between an old XPS M1210 + Wind/EEE vs. a solo TZ

To tell you the truth, I love my gadgets the way a kid loves his toys..which also (unfortunately) means that my attention span for my new toys is just a wee bit more than a kid has for his new toys
So if I save up a 1000 on the notebook, I can go spend it on other toys too ;)

Getting back to the topic, as much as I love the TZ, I really cannot justify spending 5X the money of a EEE 901 or the Wind on it.

If I had to use the EEE/Wind as my primary notebook, the TZ would have won hands down, but if it is a combination of a 12.1" machine rated say 7/10 in processing power/features + a 9" machine rated 3/10 vs. a 11.1" rated 5/10 (albeit a supremely attractive 11.1"er, I think the former combination is the winner for me..

The other factor that has been on my mind is the fact that if I pick the wind/eee, I can just throw it in my rucksack or the lady's handbag when out travelling and would not think twice about whipping it out to chck my e-mail while sitting on a beach without worrying about the salt water and the sand

With the $2000 TZ, I'll have to treat it with kid gloves

anyway, I still have time till the weekend to decide
Maybe I''ll go take a alook at the TZ again in person to decide if the oomph factor on the machine is high enough to swing the decision in its favor

When it comes down to laptops..people tend to only match the performance, eg screen size, CPU, RAM and HDD..

laptops are much more than that!

If you will threath your "laptop" as a toy...go for wind for sure!

You're not kidding. I'm still hesitant to use my TZ as a true portable for fear of breaking, dropping, or scratching up the thing.

I spent the last few months debating between an EEE 900, TZ, R7, and P1620 and finally decided on the TZ. I love the TZ, but I find myself still wanting an EEE because it's smaller and lighter, and because I'll not be afraid to take it anywhere. Busting up a $500 machine would still hurt, but not as badly.

    Just my 2 cents. =)
