Even though I'm returning the VGN-Z590UAB and awaiting my custom VGN-Z90 from Japan with a similar configuration, I wrote down the order in which Sony's recovery process installed the drivers and software. If you're curious, on the VGN-Z590UAB the process using the recovery partition took about 50 minutes. The longest part is the software install; Windows is about 10 minutes or so.
Below is the order I noticed during the restore using Sony's utility and should be the definitive word on the order in which to install everything. Obviously different countries and different configurations may vary slightly (for example, the Felicia driver, or different WWAN depending on region). Clearly a lot of the stuff is optional, but some stuff I have no idea. I've given both the normal name and the name on the installer dialog that I saw (if different) to help you find 'em easier on the recovery discs. Based on what you see below, it looks like a lot of the basic stuff (but not all) is slipstreamed or installed earlier during the Windows portion.

At this point, it reboots and then goes into Vista and appears to install some drivers. It recognizes the CPUs at that point, so it may be the chipset drivers (or something else ... dunno).
Hope this helps!

Hmmm, this looks like this sequence renders the "semi-clean" install approach useless on the Z series machines, since some of the drivers are loaded in these steps. (Specifcially the wireless driver and Intel Matrix Storage Manager. The latter may not be required but the wireless driver will be.)
