Hey all, over the past few weeks I have been trying to delete and move files from my VAIO Z. I currently have 140 GB of space free, but I can't track down where else the files are eating up the space.
How much of storage does the VAIO Z (with a 256 GB SSD config) start off with? Does the bloatware eat up a lot of space?
I do have 2 iterations of call of duty (Modern Warfare 1&2) loaded on the PC, but those shouldn't use more than 20 GBs of disk space. I also had photoshop CS5 extended as well as Adobe illustrator.
The files inside my accounts (C>Users) aren't worth more than 5 GBs.
Are there any utilities that can check how disk space is used in each folder? (without having to click "properties" every time)

189 GB free fresh from factory.

189 GB without the bloatware of with the bloatware? (E.g PMB VAIO Edition, VAIO Media Gallery, etc.)

Includes all the Sony bloatware.
I can use 226 GB on the SSD. -
You should look into the size of your paging file, your hibernation file and how much space is allocated to system restore (I've seen up to 15% of total storage space used up for SR). Also, did you upgrade your OS? If you did, then the old data is stored until you delete it.

Search for a program called "Space Sniffer", it's free, gives a really clear graphical view of how the space is being used.

Don't forget your 256GB implies 256,000,000,000 bytes of storage(according to all manufacturers), whereas computers operate in binary so each level up from byte is 2^10 (1024) of whatever which means your computer will see 256,000,000,000 /1024^3 = 238.4 GB as your hard drive.
Now there's the ~8-10GB recovery partition
Depending on which version of Windows 7: 15-25GB
Paging files/Hibernation files: depends (i think rule of thumb is the same amount of RAM you have, so 8GB)
then there are all the applications you have on.
Ota-con's statement about having 226GB usable is correct (238-12GB recovery/windows partition) and 189GB after that plausible (depends if he or you also got the adobe package with your Z too) -
I've never updated my OS. It's still Windows 7 Professional.
I'm not sure how to check how much space is allocated for system restore either. -
System Restore:
Start button > Right click over Computer and select "properties" > System Protection > Select the drive in question and click "configure" > Adjust the slider to limit the max allowed space to be used for system restore files. You'll be prompted to confirm the deletion of older restore points that do not fit into the new space you've allocated.
Initial storage space on VAIO Z?
