    Hi all,

I would appreciate any inputs regarding the Vaio Z.

I have been waiting for win 7 to come out to get the Vaio Z, and now we have @ Sony USA the option of going with the T9900 3.06 GHZ.

Now i can't decide which to go with, the P9700 or the T9900.

I hear all about the scary heat issues, and i don't know if the T9900 would be a mistake or a good choice.

I will be using the laptop everyday, doing lots of photoshop editing and all the other stuff that we all do, like surfing the net ... etc.

So what do you guys say, P9700 or T9900?

Also what would battery life be like with both P9700 and T9900?

I don't know any inputs would be really appreciate it, and i'm really confused now about which one to get.

I will be spending money on this, and i was thinking i might as well spend more and get a faster unit.

    Thanks guys

    Regards,

I'll say go with P variant processor. Because:
    Less power usage,
    Less heat
    Better battery life

From the Z owner thread, it claimed that the T9900 tend to clock down due to heat. The Z itself is already hot when running NVIDIA, and if plus with that T processor..i couldnt imagine Lol.

Btw: Im on P8600, and running stamina (most of time in this mode), the processor around temp 37 ~ 40 with casual activity (browsing, mp3s, movie). Idle is at 34 ~ 36.

    T9900

Because Vaio Z's cooling system T and P series CPU are not the same...

... but neither is the battery life.
    P, definitely.

How do you know Z has different heatsink/fan for T and P series processors?

    但這裡有個地方要注意,T開頭處理器因發熱量較高,
    所以散熱機構跟P開頭版用的有些不同,姑且不論拆機自行升級的可行性,
    如果未來有這個打算,最好是現在先攻頂

    Translation

But here there was a place to note, T at the beginning of processor heat due to high
Therefore, at the beginning of cooling bodies with the P version is slightly different to use, leaving aside the feasibility of upgrading its own disassemble,
If in the future have this intention, the best first strike is now the top

I would get P9700... More than enough for Photoshop!

Can someone tell me why i don't see the "Verizon Wireless Mobile Broadband Built-In" in the new Z?

I will be watching this thread over the weekend, and order the laptop online from Sony style USA on Monday.

Oh i also stopped at a local Sony Style store earlier today, and i was disappointed as the employees there don't really know much about their own Vaio laptops. They could not help about the T9900 when i asked few questions. They could not even understand the different #s 25w, 28w and 35w of CPU wattage. One thing that was nice and informative is when they said that the battery won't last for 7 hours, and the actual time would be about 3-4 hours. Also to note 2 weeks ago i went to the same Sony store, and i asked few questions that they couldn't answer. So 2 of their employees told me to go and buy a Dell laptop, because "sony sucks". i was like these people have big balls to tell me this about a vaio laptop, and they even work in that same vaio store. funny huh...

I have a VGNZ-45X (EU model) with a T9900 and I do not regret it.
However, I could not configure the CPU.

    Thanks for your input.

How long on average does the battery last on your T9900?

Also i didn't understand what you meant by " i could not configure the CPU"?

    Thanks again.

I would stay with P9600 even if T9800 is cheaper. The reason is simple: T is an out-dated series with 35W TDP, and it looks like Intel is trying to "fool" those high-end customers to continue buy T series until all stocks are sold out. What does 35W TDP mean? It means when CPU is at 100% load, the temperature converges to 93 degrees centigrade in SZ4, and the temperature converges to 85 degrees centigrade even in a ThinkPad T60. It would be easy for Z to get over 90 degrees centigrade with such a CPU in SPEED mode, which will cause throttling.

From P9600 to T9800, the performance increase is less than 10%, but the TDP increase is 40%. Definitely P9600 is a better choice for me.

However P9700 has 28W TDP. From P9700 to T9900 the performance increase is 10% while the TDP increase is 25%. In the case of Intel trying to play numeric games (e.g. P9700 isn't actually that 28W hot, or T9900 is actually hotter than 35W), I would stay with P9700. In the case of Intel telling the truth from the announced TDP, I would say it depends on your usage. If you are to play PS2 emulator (say, to play FFX-2) then go for T9900. If you are to move a lot and needs battery life then go for P9700.

Note that in power-saving states (CPU idle, or say, not at full voltage), the TDP of P series is still lower than that of T series, so P series brings better battery life. Please refer to the datasheets from Intel's official site.

Here is a vote on your question. Out of 43 participants, 10 voted for T9900, and 33 voted for P9700. http://www.benyouhui.com/viewthread.php?tid=955744&highlight=

I live in the Netherlands and we cannot configure our notebooks, we only can order pre-configured models. I wanted to choose a P9700 cpu also, but I 'only' could buy a high end model here with blue ray and dual ssd with a t9900 :) but now that I have a this VAio, I'm quit happy.
I think I will go a least 4 hours on VAIO optimized power profile (which indeed clocks down the cpu).
I will try test the battery on high performance mode soon.

Thanks for your informative post. I feel my mind is made to go with the P9700after reading your post.

WOW your Vaio is tuned up all the way! 4 hours to me is pretty good, as with my current SZ650 i can barely get 3 hours out of it.

    Thanks for your inputs again

If I just surf the internet and type documents, my p9600 can last about 5 hours in stamina mode :) (of course depends on the applications running)

WOW 5 hours would be a dream for me. As i said i can barely get 3 hours with my SZ, and that's on stamina mode + having the brightness set @ 35%, refresh rate @ 40HZ, color quality @ 16 bit, cpu fan control @ level 1 (quiet), and i.LINK, CD/DVD, and LAN all disabled.

I see in your signture that you have an intel ssd? do you know anything about SSD that comes with the Vaio Z?

I'm getting the 256 SSD with the Z, and there is no information about it. Who makes it, and do you know how fast it's ?

    Thanks
