Well I just installed a new Patriot 128gb SSD today. All I have to say is WOW. This thing is just so fast now. It takes about 1.5 second to open firefox and it wakes from Hibernation very fast. My fan seems like it isn't on quite as much either. I haven't had a chance to do a full test on battery life and some other applications but I will in the next couple days.

was it cheaper installing the ssd urself? cos the z series has the option of buying it with ssd installed.

or are the ssds provided by sony not as fast as the patriot?

The Sony options are faster, but also a lot more expensive. AFAIK, Sony uses 2x64GB SSDs in a RAID0 configuration, so you get the added performance bonus of having RAID striping. :)

I paid $439 and there is a $70 main in rebate. This drive is super fast. I haven't had any bottle necks yet. This patriot drive is version 2 and they have optimized it. I have done quite a bit of multitasking. Every once in a while I will get a stutter when the disk is writing a lot. It is a very quick stutter and is way better than the stutters I was getting from my 250gb 5400rpm drive. I have a 7200 rpm seagate in here as well, and the new SSD is much faster. I can load photoshop in a matter of a few seconds.

I just did a start up test and with all the normal stuff running in the background it took 39 seconds from shutdown to windows vista. Another place I really notice a difference is putting the computer to sleep and waking it up. It is almost instant.

I just bought a Transcend TS128GSSD25S-M (MLC) around US382.00. The performance nearly the same as OCZ v2. You still have to do a lot of tweak to make it runs better.

i hear a lot of pple installing ssds into their Z series.

does this mean they remove the original hdd? or remove the dvd?

is there a way to install a sdd, yet keep both the dvd and the original 7200rpm hdd?

fredguy-what tweaks are you doing? I haven't done anything yet and it seems to run quite well. I am going to do some research this weekend and try and make it run faster as well. If any body has any help it would be much appreciated.

I use vlite to trim down the Home Premium SP1 x64 to 1.9GB (with MS update) and follow the guy in the link below:

    http://www.ocztechnologyforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=43525

One thing I haven't done is the RAMDisk, it looks like there are some problem in the free version.
Now I can startup Vista in 1 min 6 sec.

Techadventures, when you say you have a 7200rpm Seagate in there as well, do you mean you have two drives in your laptop or that the Seagate was a former system drive? Your experience gets my hopes up a bit because I have a G.Skill 128gb MLC on the way.

fredguy: Do you notice an improvement in performance. I am use to Vista 64 as that is what I am running on my desktop. I really want to move to 64 so i can access all my ram. Can I use the same product key if I "find" a Vista Business 64 dvd for install? Also, can you please supply a link to were you found all the drivers. I know there is a post about 64bit on the Z, but it is getting a little out of control (the size I mean). If you could point me to the place were I download the correct drivers I would be much appreciated.

    Thanks

OK - I am getting really close on doing this upgrade. Techadventures - do you give this the thumbs up or thumbs down? I know there is significant concern over the lag on this drive. I am currently using a Seagate 7200.3 320GB Drive. OK - please let me know - thanks!

You can feel the improvement, but hard to say how much it can go.
Try to use native 64 bit software as many as possible.
You can use the same key for x64 Bussiness. Here is the link from Sony where you can download all x64 drivers.

Why use the 64 bit vs. the 32 bit? Will all of my software run on 64 bit? I wonder if it will be quicker in 64bit?

64bit can access all 4gb of ram instead of 3.3 for 32 and programs can only access 2.0gb. I give the thumbs way up on this drive. Very little lag...I would say the same amount as my 5400rpm drive but with benefit of being super fast 98% of the time.

I have a vista home premium 64 dvd...does that DVD contain vista business as well. I have a vista business proper key...I think I read somewhere that all versions of vista are on each dvd.

I just try the Diskeeper 2009. This version has config suitable for SSD (HyperFast).
After config and defrag, Now I can boot up my system in 1 min (before it is 1min and 6 sec).

Usually you don't have to defrag on SSD, but it still degrade overtime.
You don't have to set auto defrag, but do it manually when needed.

@vht, below is the link you can download the doc. This is from one of the thread here, but I add a few pictures to show how the aluminium frame hook up with the base.
