I have updated my bios to R4041M3, performed a clean install of Windows 7, and installed all the new win 7 drivers including the video driver from this page:

    http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-download.pl?mdl=VGNZ890&upd_id=5151&os_id=47

I have also followed firestone's post on some of the install order for the sony utilities, using the files downloading from his post:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=5435779&postcount=2

However, currently I cannot adjust the brightness setting (using the Fn key) on both stamina and speed mode. Before when I was using vaio control centre version 3 on Win 7, I was still able to adjust the brightness setting on stamina mode. Did I do something wrong? Did anyone ever get the brightness adjust working in speed mode on Win 7? Thanks!

if you're running VAIO event service 5.0 on the OLD bios, you will not have brightness control in either mode.

if you run event service 4.3 on the OLD bios, you will have control in STAMINA, but not speed.

if you have the NEW bios, and event service 5.0, then both will work.

Ok thanks. I have installed the R4043 bios and now the brigtness adjust key works in both speed and stamina mode.

However, after I switched to speed mode, I can't access the nvidia control panel. It is not on the context menu and when I try to open it thru the control panel, it doesn't load up.

Is anyone experiencing this or did I just have a faulty installation?

Just did a fresh install of Win 7 and installed all the drivers again and now everything's working perfectly.

I have no idea how many times I've installed Win 7 now...good thing I've cloned the partition of an activated Win 7 fresh install first.

I had the exact same problem. After chatting 3 times with Sony support and trying various things to get it to work, they finally told me that was just the way it was supposed to be. I have the VGN-Z750D and I'm going to look for the BIOS update. I'll post if it works. Thanks so much...

Ooops! I downloading the BIOS version on Sony's website. After downloading your BIOS version and uninstalling/reinstalling the various drivers, the brightness control finally works. Thanks so much! I'll never use Sony Chat again!!!
