If I use a "Clean" install to replace XP on my SZ will I be able to replace some of the Sony software that came with my computer? Are the software update downloads that Sony just place on their WEB site complete programs, or is it necessary to have the previous versions already on the computer?

Thank you for the reply but there are a few issues that I do not understand.

    1. Are you saying that I cannot do a clean install even if I have a valid copy of XP already running on my computer; do I need an XP disk with serial number?

    2. If I do a clean install using the method you describe, can I install Sony software updates later?

I have an clean install of Windows Vista Ultimate from a retail copy I purchased separately (not from Sony).

I just installed a bunch of these updates and most things work great: Roxio, WinDVD, function keys for screen brightness, etc.

The only thing so far that failed was the camera filter - I have no idea why.

[update: the brightness function keys only work on the intel video card, not the nvidia, and I did install the new nvidia drivers....]

No luck with the camera filter on a SZ330PB either. Function keys and the two extra buttons work, Asus fingerprint driver 5.6 works. No driver for the Memory Stick slot either. One I tried for the FE890 produced a dummy duplicate drive for SD and a device for memory stick with no icon.

As of now the drivers at esupport are not complete and obviously the camera driver is broken.

I suppose if I had to I could use the machine without the camera or hard disk protection. Good thing I don't have to. The wireless modem is a non issue as it is not activated.

Actually, the utillity driver for the FE890 worked better than the drivers made for the SZ330. It installed a utility to turn off bluetooth.
