My computer came with Windows Vista Business Edition. I've given up with it and installed Windows XP Pro on it.![]()
I have asked Sony's Support for help, but of course this procedure it is not supported.
Any of you have done this before? If so, please help me out with some drivers that might work.
So far, this is what does not work.
Bluetooth
DVD/RW Software
Biometrics
FN Keys (Up/Down Contrast, Network Switch, etc)
Thanks in advance.

I've found another issue. When I try to Standby or Hibernate the laptop just shuts down.
This is the biggest problem so far. I can live for a while without the Biometrics or Bluetooth connectivity, but having to boot up from scratch every time I move is painful. -
The best thing for you to do is to download all the drivers from the intel site directly so you will not see any sony vaio crap. That is what i did but unfortunately i couldn't find the drivers for the fingerprint reader, PCI device which should be the modem and some unknown device which i couldn't figure out. Bluetooth driver was easily downloaded by doing a google search. Other then that everything was working properly. HOpe this helps you out.

Did you try using the TXN drivers for another model?
I noticed the VGN-TXN19 has the same specs (except CPU speed) as the TXN27
http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-list.pl?mdl=VGNTXN19P&UpdateType=Original -
Sony has most driver for XP for the TXN15P/B - they should be compatible with the TXN27 ...
UPEK FingerPrint drivers work like a charme - after installing you will have to download as well the security software (245MB!!!) Even that crap worked without any problems.
Just don't download the INFINEON stuff but only the UPEK files there (2 files: 1x driver, 1 time fingerprint security software)
The only 2 problems I am facing: BT (TOSHIBA STACK) and I would like to get this OSD stuff for volume and brightness back on my device! Can anybody help?
***Edit:
BT fixed with the TOSHIBA STACK BLUETOOTH drivers (you can find the easily with Google). OSD for volume and brightness still not done ... -

Guys, go to this link and download both drivers and utilities and start installing from DLLs first..
ftp://ftp.vaio-link.com/pub/OS/
For all the 5th Generation TX Series That is TXN25N / 27N and 29N
ftp://ftp.vaio-link.com/pub/OS/XPDOWNGRADE/TX5/
Only thing I haven't been able to get to work is Fn + F1 which is to select between BT / WIFI / WWAN
Let me know if you all get any luck getting this working.. -
Thanks for the utilities and drivers kamranwpi. It was a godsend! But i do have one question, i still can't get the osd to work for screen brightness and volume and the eject button. Can anyone shed some light on this to get it to work? It sux that i can't control the screen brightness.
Thanks -
does fan control work in windows xp vaio power mangement?
does it allow you to control fan rpm? or does it not? -
You have to install the NOTEBOOK UTILITIES for your model. After a restart it should work properly! Just don't forget to remove some application you don't want to keep afterwards, such as the sony connection wizard and also the hard drive protection ...
It might be that it does not work after first installation - I had to install it on mine several times until it finally worked. Afterwards I made again a clean installation on my laptop, installed all drivers and software first and finally the notebook utilities and it worked immediatly.
Hope that helps ...

hmmm... I tried that but it still doen't work. I installed the utilities for my model, txn27cn but it still doesn't work. I installed the dll for the one kamranwpi included in his files. Should i install the one for the txn27cn instead? If i do, will it screw anything up? Thanks

Install drivers from ftp://ftp.vaio-link.com/pub/OS/XPDOWNGRADE/TX5/ in number order.
Install Sony Notebook Control and Sony Programmable I/O for the TXN15N Also.
Don't install the Wireless Switching Utility or the LAN Switching on the vaio-link FTP. They suck. Use the SmartWi Connection Utility for the TXN15N ( http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-download.pl?mdl=VGNTXN15PT&upd_id=2868&os_id=7) Worked on my TXN25N. The Fn-F1 on-screen convenient switching will work also.
The FlashMedia, I used TIDMSC-01549400-US.EXE 2.0.0.18 from the TXN15N Sony Support page also.
I installed the latest intel video and Wireless LAN drivers from the intel site.
Also, Go to http://sprint.com/downloads and install the latest Sprint drivers for the Novatel. Novatel S620/S720/U720/EX720 Connection Manager Software SCM_3.09.013.msi (includes the EVDO Rev. A firmware flash)
If you havent already installed the Firmware Update from Sony for the Mat$hita UJ-825 (if that's what you have in it) which the supplied installer on sony's site will "coveniently" only run under Vista, this will run on XP and update firmware to 1.31.. took a while to find this one
ftp://ftp.vaio.sony.co.jp/pub/vaio/download/SP-014040-03/
Also, UPEK QL Protector 5.3 on that FTP is adequate.. but kinda sux when you're used to 5.6 that came with Vista. ftp://ftp.vaio-link.com//PUB/OS/Vis..._5.6.0.3278/Protector_Suite_QL_5.6.0.3278.zip The FTP path says Vista, but it will install on XP

HA. Even Sony has listened up to their users saying, "Vista SUCKS."
They're now providing XP Drivers and Software on their Support pages, for models that shipped with Vista.
"Due to popular demand Sony is offering Microsoft® Windows® XP® compatible drivers and utilities for VAIO® computers that originally shipped with the Windows Vista® operating system. These files are intended to provide basic system functionality under Windows XP operating system. "

Has any one noticed that Wireless Thing on the computer goes away all of a sudden, only way to get WiFi back is by restarting on TXN27N w/ XP.
It was doing so much lately, that I didn't know what to do, so I am putting it back on Vista and see if it does it or not... has any one else experience same thing??
Thanks -
I have a TXN27CN. I just downgraded to XP Pro from Vista Business. The computer generally works right now. What I cannot get working are the fn+F5/6 (brightness) Fn+F7 (LCD/External monitor switching), Fn+F10 (switches screen resolution). On boot up the computer says the battery installer cannot be found (it is listed as unknown in the device manager), and I have not gotten the AV buttons to work. I downloaded the drivers and utilities from the links provided and installed them in order. One question. Some of the drivers don't have an install exe, where would I put the DLLs that I find in those files? Can I just copy them to C:\WINDOWS\system32 ?
The following have an ! beside them in Device Manager. Batteries contains two unknown devices (I cannot get the drivers installed using the manager's update driver/install driver option)
Under other Devices: Ethernet Controller (wireless works fine), Mass Storage Controller (I can't use either the memory stick or SD reader on my computer), one Unknown Device, Video Controller and Video Controller (VGA compatible)
What would I need to do to fix these issues? -
jazzencat,
Go to esupport.sony.com - select your device there and download the following drivers for XP:
- Memory Card Reader/Writer
- System Components
- Notebook Control and Utilities
You will have to install them maybe a couple of times until it will work! It is a little bit tricky but it will work in the end!
In worst case install all drivers from the support page until it works, then start removing what you don't need!
After you got your drivers working I recommend that you make a full system backup with ACRONIS HOME 10 or similar software, so, you won't have to worry next time you need to install your laptop! Let me know if it helped! -
You will get it back too by removing the battery for a few minutes under VISTA!

Thanks, Junner2003, that did help some the computer still is not recognizing the battery correctly and I still have a few other missing drivers. I decided since I am paying $25 for the discs for the Sony Install and Driver Discs I may as well get them. Right now, the computer does what I need it to, the few things that don't work are secondary at the moment. I'll worry about getting everything working perfectly after my exams.
