I really have my heart set on doing a clean install no matter what computer I choose. But I'd really like a SSD drive as I need speed over storage. So I'm wondering if it possible to install a SSD drive in a Vaio SR laptop. What do I do about drivers?

I have my choices down between a Lenovo X301 with a SSD and a Vaio SR210 without a SSD. I like the looks of the Vaio better, but I'm willing to pay for a SSD premium.

If anyone has had any success installing a SSD in a Vaio laptop(where SSD's are not an option) I'd love to hear about it?

I can't wait to actually get a notebook of my own and start helping other people, as I feel like all I do on this site is ask questions. The advice I've gotten on this website has been fantastic, so thankyou.

I don't have to do that non elegant solution, right?

Is it really this simple (Note: I'm skipping many of the clean install steps)
    1. Replace the HDD with a SSD
    2. Start installing a clean version of windows
    3. Install a SSD driver(if there is one?)
    4. Enjoy my faster computer

If it is, I think I'm sold. Also if I mess up any of the above steps(besides the last one, lol) can I just reinsert the Sony HDD and everything will be back to normal?

It should be the exact same as buying a new HDD. You don't need any drivers, as soon as you plug it in, it should work.

Gee! you make it should hard!
    1. replace disk
    2. install windows!
    3. Enjoy!

it took me about 30min to do the upgrade in my thinkpad... 20min's was spent look of a screw on the floor...

oh and SSD are easier than HDD's becuase if you drop it won't break!

as for your last question, yes if you put the old harddisk back in the computer EVERYTHING will be how you left it(unless your drop it of course lol)

Edit: My tip: Force nothing; better to ask first,

a light push is all you should need

    YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm so excited now, I get to have my cake and eat it too.

One last question and I'm good. Did you have to buy some sort of enclosure of did it just fit right in the 2.5" drive just like a regular HDD?

as long as you buy a 2.5inch SSD you won't need any adapters.

and yah, it's easier than RAM in my opinion!

Edit: Also if you need help during the switch there hundreds of people on here that can help ;)

This news made my day. I've been looking for notebooks around the web and have limited myself to the most expensive SSD laptops. But now I can look at more options and save some money. And at the end of the day, if I screw up the clean install I'll have the old HDD to fall back on.

    Perfect. Thankyou.

Smaller than 14 inches, as light as possible and a dvd drive. I tend to research purchases for a long time though. I'm probably going to buy it in the summer, so I'm hoping some update models come out.

By the way, I like your location. It made me laugh.

    no problem at all.

if everyone helps everyone, everyone's happy.

good luck with the research(it might be an idea to post another thread in the 'What notebook should I buy' section to get some ideas on whats out there.
