just purchased a sony VGN-FZ285U. Despite the manual featuring Instant Mode, pressing the AV mode button in shutdown/hibernate mode does nothing. The troubleshooting guide suggests something, but following that returns a message "c:InstantON" cannot be found. Anyone has a solution?

Do you have a blue ray drive or the Nvidia graphics. If so the instant on function can only be used to startup Vista. It will not work as an "offlne" DVD player.

This is an annoying problem on many VAIO notebooks, the NR we have and the VAIO FZ we had did the same thing when you pushed the A/V button (went to what looked like a DOS prompt). In fact, I believe on the Sony VAIO CR we had actually worked.

    Thanks Gary,

I have both Blu-Ray as well as Nvidia Graphics card. The Sony Tech support have given up on it. :(

Given up on it? I am not sure why they would even "start" on it. Sony's own documentation on Instant Mode clearly states it doe not function with blue ray drives or Nvidia graphics cards.

why would they put the functionality in the laptop if it doesnt work. are they just being lazy and using the same shells and shoving different components in?

The button DOES function, but it does not provide "instant on" mode if you have a blueray or Nvidia equipped machine. Instead it will start up Vista. And if Vista is running, it brings up transparent tool bar at the top of the screen that lets you select from various meida apps on your machine.
