A couple of weeks ago I bought a Sony Vaio Fz31z, this modell is equipped with both a blue-ray drive and a Nvidia GeForce video adapter. I have read a lot of threads from people that have had problem with instantOn. I became a little confused when I found that the instantOn software were installed under C:\InstantOn, but like most vaio fz owners I couldn`t run instantOn by pushing the Av Mode button on the keyboard. The Av Mode button just started vista and some strange multimedia bar that was floating around at the top of the screen. I consider this type of preinstalled multi-media apps as being bloatware which the fz is jam packed with.

I did not thought that by uninstalling all this preinstalled bloatware crap would have any direct impact on instantOn but it had. When I now push the Av-mode button, InstantOn loads as it should, so clearly the sony support does not know what they are talking about when they say:
"The Instant Mode feature is supported on computers that have an Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator video adapter only. On computers equipped with a NVIDIA® GeForce™ video adapter, the Instant Mode feature is not supported and the Instant On software is not listed in the VAIO Recovery Center."

I have also removed the recovery partion and I am dual booting my system between Gentoo and vista, Grub is my boot loader. But I do not think that this matters when it comes to InstantOn.

If the Sony support or somebody else clamies that vaio fz(s) does not have the instantOn software due to a Nvidia graphics card, my fz31z is a living proof of the opposite!

Note that this might differ over different versions of the fzs and over countries. But I believe that if you have a folder named c:\InstatOn instantOn could be started. InstantOn is a great feature on Sony vaios.
