    tried that too, well, i should say, i am in the process of trying that with grub.
    im not a linux guru or nuthin, but with a default suse install, everything works fine until i try to boot, then i get:
    "Grub cannot load - Error 21"
    i also should mention its the jmicron based filemate ssd, so the linux distro recognizes it immediately, but no matter if i try replacing the MBR with generic code or if i set it to boot from the linux boot partition, i get the same grub error 21 directly after the post screen, when it attempts to load the grub bootloader menu.

    am i misunderstanding u? is there some other type of bootloader i can install that isn't grub or lilo?
    or if you are talking about grub, how should i configure it, because i assume that the "grub error 21" is some sort of problem accessing the grub bootloader itself, maybe because it is located on a drive connected to the expresscard slot.

    again to anyone else reading...
    even if it is a wild "one chance in a million this might work" type of guess, if you have ANY ideas please suggest away... i have no problem rebuilding the the windows xp bootloader that it is currently using, so i'm not timid about trying anything that even sounds like it might work.

    p.s.-sorry bout the double post, i forgot to ask pyro if he could clarify his comment about the bootloader

    I'm probably going to sound really stupid, but I don't see anywhere to download advanced_menu.py

    whit the "same" insyde h2o bios
    i tried to enable the adv.menu but gives me error:
    so i opened the bios file (3310.fd downloaded from acer site) in winhex
    found the VSS but there are 2 of them
    starting at different offsets

    first ($Vss) 24 is to c0048
    the yy after is to c004c

    the second ($Vss) 24 is to e4608
    the u after is to e460c

    (i'm going wild with all this numbers)
    please help me to set:

    VSS_OFFSET = ?
    VSS_SIZE = ?

    PATCH_OFFSET = ?
    PATCH_VALUE = ?

    do i need to dump the bios or its good that from the support site?

    tip:to find easily Vss search text mode(in winhex)

    I had enabled advanced menu in bios thanks to this thread, so I want to thank psyq321 and all of the people that made it possible.

    I have used linux and even windows 7 with the VGA Switching Policy set on "Static" and noticed like I was expecting it, there was no more brightness control when using the nVIDIA GT 330M neither on windows or linux.

    But something just surprised me.

    I've just decided to make a clean windows 7 install, the VGA Switching Policy was set "Static" and I've installed nVIDIA 266.35 driver.
    As soon as it was installed, the brightness went down as my laptop wasn't plug :eek: and I could modify the brightness with windows, then I've installed few sony driver and now I can adjust luminosity with F5 and F6 key just like if I was in dynamic VGA Switching policy mode.

    I thought we couldn't control brightness when intel HD graphic was turned off ?
    Hope it can help ubuntu users to get brightness control working.

    I tried to follow the steps for windows, and get this error after it spends 20 or so seconds reading the blocks.

    Anything I should try to get around this?

    Btw, I am trying this on a hp tm2t-1100, should still work though.

    The error you get has nothing to do with the bios itself. Either you have your flash drive locked, not enough space, data error etc.

    Try to reformat it clean and start over again.

    Well I tried every thumbdrive I own, and none of them seem to work. I tried about 4 different brand drives varying in size from 128mb to 2gb. Formatted each one to FAT, FAT32, and NTFS with no avail.

    Anyone know a specific thumbdrive that works everytime with low level stuff like this? I would greatly appreciate a link to purchase one that works.

    I am using a old (7+ years) USB drive that is 128MB and it works with no issues.. Not sure why yours would be. Have you tried a different USB port?

    Search the internet for special thumbdrive formatting tools which install a bootable system. Do you use FreeDOS installer? That one should work, there is no need to reformat your thumbdrive. Partition type must be FAT or FAT32 where I would recommend FAT as this is working best. If this is still not working, try another flashdrive. Old ones like komugi says do work and are absolutely sufficent for this type of use. I use a very old 128MB flashdrive as well.
    As I already mentioned, make sure there is no write protection lock activated (some thumdrives have special slide switches for that)!

    I give up, I have tried 6 different jumpdrives in total, from 128mb to 2gb in all usb ports, formatted in fat16 and fat32 with various allocation sizes. I tried flipping the write protect switch on one, had no effect on read or write in dos. I also tried a different version of Freedos, same error. I did discover however that it will dump the backup if I run the Flash utility from A:\ however, I cannot copy from A:\ to C:\ because after running the utility in A any copy or dir commands that include and/or are run from the C:\ directory will spit out the same error from before Abort? Retry? Ignore? Fail?

    Thanks for the suggestions pyr0 and komugi.

    Dunno what to do, maybe it's still the jumpdrive? If anyone can provide a link to one that works and is still for sale, that would be awesome.

    Well after 20 something jumprdrives I managed to find the sweet spot on my machine, and it was not a jumpdrive at all. I also managed to run the script and wondering if everything looks good.

    Here is my output:

    Code:
    D:\PortablePython_1.1_py2.6.1\App>python advanced_menu.py BACKUP.ROM NEW.ROM

    Updating VSS...
    Updating BIOS...
    Writing output...
    Done
    My only worry is this is not a sony machine, this is an HP Touchsmart TM2t-1100

    But judging from the fact I received no errors makes me think they have the same VSS offset and register. Or am I misunderstanding something?

    The dump shows this in WinHex, the correct sequence.

    [IMG]

    I may try flashing anyway just b/c these registers are not particularly critical anyway, the backup can always be reflashed.

    Well, which option did you choose for the freedos boot.
    If I'm not wrong, never choose live Freedos with EMM386 or HIMEM.
    Live Freedos Only.

    @NHT

    Thanks for the quick reply. I tried out all freedos boot options, but nothing worked. I have an external floppy drive here, could that work?

    Thanks again

    I have no idea. Why didn't you dump the bios directly to the C?
    example: fla c:\dump.rom /g

    EDIT: After trying several usb sticks i finally found one that worked!

    What do you get with the command? At least, you will have an error message.
    Can you make a photo of your screen executing the command?

    Hi NHT... it worked ALL in the end. It seemed that the problem was the USB it tried before. Also it was bootable, the dump-File could not be written or the flash program could not be executed.

    In the end i tried every usb stick i have (with the same procedure) and one finally worked as proposed.

    BUT: I have another question. I could not get the external VGA working properlly. My Z13 has the 1600px resolution, my external screen has a 1920px resolution but still, the VGA output does not recognize it.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks again for you time and your help

    Hello, I tried to get the bios with a freedos stick and fla.

    It's a sony f11 with gt330m and R0280Y6 rom.

    Now there always appears an error:

    I tried lots of fla versions, but no luck. Any ideas how to fix this?

    Ok, it seems your tutorial does not work with Vaio devices that have an AMI APTIO bios like the Vaio F11...??

    His tutorial is for Vaio Z, he never said that it would work with others devices.
    Anyway, fla is flash tool for Insyde BIOS, there is no way it will work with AMI Bios.

    I'm looking for a way to (1) dump the BIOS of my Vaio YB, and (2) unlock advanced options. All I get using "fla.exe dump.rom /g" (fla is latest ver) is some weird error saying not permitted. I need help here!

    Did you try to tune Fan speed or turn it off? I have VPCZ13 and I do not like its quiet but annoying roar "rrrrr" or buzz "zzzz" (you can hear it in attachment) - it's particularly noticeable when there is a silence around in the room (in 10 minutes I have a headache), haven't you noticed? The fan works always after start, even when temperature of CPU is 20-30 C., even inside the refrigerator :D . Btw, I've listened other vaio VPCZ notebooks - all them have a such noise... Sony helpdesk answered that it's normal. )) Another my notebook Samsung in price of 3 times lower works totally silent (but has other disadvantages). So, the question - How to tune the fan start on after 40, 50 C.??

    I'm thinking of doing this on my Vaio Z...

    My only reason is to be able to increase memory speed. Is that an available option?

    I currently have two sticks rated at 667MHz each, but CPUz is showing my system memory running at 533MHz..

    Thanks.

    Dual Core Capella i3, i5, i7 don't support 667Mhz (Double Data Rate =1333Mhz).
    533Mhz (1066) is max: http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=49666&processor=i7-640M&spec-codes=SLBTN,SLBZU

    Is there a way to disable the backlit keyboard on the Z?

    This would be useful since currently there seems to be no way to control the backlight in linux.

    April fool's day is over, right? C'mon, tell us the story, I'm very curious.

    I was doing research on that for two months and finally found a trick to make the Z silent in idle by continously changing the cooling policy via S-Button in a ~0.5s interval. Unfortunately, this only works in Windows and you need to control the temperature on your own since the fan does not start at all - whatever how high your CPU temp is - so I decided not to develop any further and automate that.

    Is it possible to undervolt the 330M GPu?

    I sometimes play some games but it really gets too hot. i would ideally want to undervolt the cpu as well.

    Hello everyone. I've a VGN-Z21MN (french modèle) as two of you with BIOS R2170M3. I've modified the advance_menu.py like this:

    Code:
    VSS_OFFSET = 0x3b0048
    VSS_SIZE = 0x00ffb8

    PATCH_OFFSET = 0x25A
    PATCH_VALUE = 0x01

    Code:

    Updating VSS...
    Updating BIOS...
    Writing output...
    Done

    My last computer (a Samsung with old BIOS) died after a bad flashing, so I want to be sure that the new BIOS seems to be correct before doing anything.

    The goal is to have AHCI in order to put a Vertex 2 SSD in replacement of the old 5400RPM HDD.

    Thanks a lot.

    Hello,

    I have reinstalled all of the Sony drivers and have had no luck like others here in this thread gaining control over the screen brightness.

    Any thoughts?

    Brightness only works with Intel on my machine.
    It is fine with me because I only use nVidia when I am plugged into an external monitor, I use Intel on the go when on batteries.

    Hi,

    I hope you are right. I have done everything but just the last step is remaining ("Fla new.rom /f"). Did you test with the exact model?

    All Z's do have the same BIOS so there is no difference b/w yours and all the others which were already hacked here. I did this thing as well and it took 10minutes in total and works without any flaws.
