    Hi guys,

I am considering a range of Vaios at the moment (including some HP models; although Vaios are my #1 choice).

With the new Core i7 Processors out, I am wondering whether buying a Core 2 Duo processor of any sort (TT: SU; Z & SR: P9xxx, etc) now would mean they would be totally redundant by Q1 of 2010 or do you see some variants of the Core 2 Duo processor lasting a bit longer?

I realise technology continues to move forward at a rapid pace and was just curious about where Core 2 Duo stands in Q1 of next year. Your comments are welcomed :)

To be honest, I don't think the mobile i7 stuff will really take off for a while. The P series processors will be perfect for at least another 1-2 years unless you are doing some really intensive CPU stuff where i7 will matter. Otherwise, for most users and most apps, the P series will be just fine.

I have to agree that there's really no rush for the i7 stuff, and that C2D is fine for now.

I think the main problem with the i7 is heat?

    Thanks guys,

Yes, from what I have read, the Core i7 laptops are suffering from heat and short battery life.

I guess what I don't want is to buy an expensive Sony Vaio Z only to see Sony come out with a Core i7 version of the Z in two months.

Are there plans for any SU or SL-like processors with the new Core i7s?

I believe the low voltage core i5/i3 will be out around Q2 2010.

So in other words Core 2 Duo processors will still hold a decent market share in 2010?!

Absolutely, in my opinion they will be the predominant processors for all of 2010.

I suppose Core 2 Duo processors have reached a stage where it's not only fast but it's also energy efficient.

Core i7, i5 etc may have to wait a few years before it finds a balance between speed and battery life.
