    Hello all..
I am planning to upgrade to vista home premium on my sony FE770 notebook.( I am still waiting to receive the Express upgrade DVD from Q media  ).

I have a 1 GB RAM & 1.83GHz speed with Intel core 2 Duo notebook. Will the Vista home premium run smoothly with all AEro experience after the upgrade.Or do i need to upgrade my Ram to 2GB.I am really confused & sugesstion from all of you will be really great.

Has anyone upgraded Vista home premium to FE770g model or any Vaio with 1GB ram model.Any suggestion regarding this express upgrade will be helpfull, because I consider myself a tecno novice.

Waitng for your suggestion. Thanks in advance

1GB will be enough for Vista with Aero only if you're not planning to play any games or do anything else ram intensive like editing videos.
For instance, right now I'm running Firefox, MS word with Aero turned on and my ram usage is hovering at around 700MB. So in this case 1gig would be enough. However when I'm playing games, ram usage easily goes up to 1.1-1.2gb.

CeeNote described it well. Basically 1 GB RAM is enough to run Aero fine provided you're just surfing the web and doing word processing or something. But gaming with Aero on, you should get 2 GB RAM.

    Thanks !!

I am also using Norton Internet suite 2007 . so after the upgrade if I am not into games then I hope 1 gb will be sufficient for aero, internet browsing & normal stuff with NIS 2007 running..please suggest????

Care to say why? Or show facts backing this up?

Because I feel you are wrong, seeing as how several people just gave certain examples where it DOES work with 1gb.

I also can vouch for this, I'm running Vista ultimate with 1gb of ram and it's perfectly fine in day to day tasks such as email, web surfing, word processing etc.

Even tho what you said is untrue, at least try to back urself up by giving some sort of proof.

Well it's true. 1GB is nothing even by XP standards.

These days you need 2GB or more to run things -- especially if you are into gaming, photo or video editing.

Required memory is a little bit subjective--as you all have mentioned, it really depends on what kind of tasks you will be doing as well as what kind of programs you have open at once--some of you may like to have a million windows open at the same time, others only do one operation at a time. I can tell you from personal experience that 1 GB will run Vista with Aero, but you will PROBABLY want more if you'll be gaming or doing more memory intensive tasks. My roommate has a toshiba tablet with Vista and 1 GB of memory--he noticed it lagging during normal tasks, but he has the GMA 950; I think if you have integrated graphics a little more memory is in order. Once he upgraded to two gigabytes he noticed quite a speed increase.

I challenge that :p. I run Windows XP, and I have Norton Internet Security, Adobe Photoshop, Macromedia Dreamweaver running all the time, and I'm using 1 GB and its working fine for me.

But in terms of Vista and Aero, running all those tasks I don't think 1 GB is enough.

The fact that my Vista is idling at around 750Mb, so that's hardly any room left for me to do anything. And right now I've got the following opened:

    • Firefox
    • Sidebar (4 gadgets)
    • Messenger Live
    • Windows Media Player (playing MP3)

It's running at 905MB of RAM. So that's why I say it's not enough (personally) because I run applications like Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Flash, Director or InDesign alot for my Uni work.

So that was just my personal opinion since 'superstar' didn't state what he/she wanted to use Vista for.

I am using 1gb right now with Vista business.
It works fine for my spreadsheets and PDf's but I could use a little more oomph.
I just ordered 2gb from newegg for $120, be here Thursday. :)

i'm running vista with aero on my fe770 with 1GB memory. i don't feel any lag compare to using xp. the only real difference i noticed was it takes much longer to load up windows at the start up as well as shut down.

Look into how Vista manages memory a bit further before coming to this conclusion. For example, here is an interesting quote:

"After you’ve used a Windows Vista system a while, you’ll see a low number for the Free Physical Memory counter on Task Manager’s Performance page. That’s because SuperFetch and standard Windows caching make use of all available physical memory to cache disk data." from http://www.microsoft.com/technet/technetmag/issues/2007/03/VistaKernel/

Looks like grisjuan is the only one who did his homework. ;)

Vista will use avaliable free physical memory for SuperFetch, so take how much physical RAM being used with a grain of salt. If you're using a memory intensive program, Vista will reallocate the memory to where it's needed to the best of its ability.

Now, is 1gb enough? It will depend on what you do. For typical web browsing, email, multimedia, school, and so forth, it's plenty. Even for a lot of games it's enough.

Also, what does Aero have anything to do with anything? When you are using an application that is 3D intensive, Aero shuts off.

Anyways, RAM usage will depend on what you use the machine for. 2Gb is definitely nice on Vista since it gives SuperFetch a good chunk to work with while having plenty left over for applications.

But like I said before, its just my opinion that I need more RAM cause I use a lot of applications which requires lots of RAM and i have noticed slow downs when using Vista whereas I had no problem on my XP with the same amount of RAM/Speed.

Alright so here is my 2 cents.

    1GB = probably not enough
I am currently running itunes, like 5 firefox windows, quite a few startup programs and aero is turned on and im using about 1GB. However, Vista has a new feature called SuperFetch, which basically makes the best use of your RAM as possible. So, It basically predicts which programs you are going to run and preloads them into your RAM to allow for faster launches and less hard drive strain.

Another thing that could work in your favor is a feature called ReadyBoost. This means that you can buy specially made flashdrives that you can plug in and your computer will utilize it as memory. So you can just go buy like a $20 2GB drive and plug it in.

Long story short: 1GB is prolly not enough, but dont spend the money on upgrading your memory. Just go buy a flash drive with ReadyBoost.

can you explain more on that? can we use a memory stick since most vaios have the memory stick slot integrated? if so that'll be really great since 4GB pro duos are less than 200$cad

i believe that you can use memory sticks, however you want to get one that has a read/write capacity as high as possible. They are also a lot more expensive than a readyboost flash drive. If you just google "readyboost on vista" you should get a decent number of hits explaining the details. Sorry i don't know them all right off the bat.

I tried using a Memory Stick via the ExpressCard adapter that came with the SZ, but I looked in the Properties menu and it didn't come up with the option for 'ReadyBoost', but it did show up with my USB Flash Drive.

then your readyboost must be disabled...
if i remember correctly, it's under "turn windows features on and off" in one of the subfolder features...if not, then it must be in the services that u have to enable.
then when u plug in the memory stick it will pop out the readyboost option and windows will check for your card compatibility

How on earth do you get 800Mb XP? My XP computer idles at 200~MB of RAM with 35 processes. It's just this damn Vista that I can't get the processes down.

At the moment, firefox open only and...

    58 processes
    768MB of RAM
