    Is FW capable of 2560x1440 resolution on an external display over HDMI->DVI?

    I'm using an European version of Vaio FW51, the video card is ATI 4650.

    Tried to browse through the specs, no information. Looked up newer models EB with the 5650 onboard, it says maximum 1920x1200 as an external resolution.

    Is it really so? Is it a hardware or software limitation? Is it possible to enable higher resolutions?

    P.S. Recently added a smaller 1600x900 resolution (the native is 1920x1080) by adding this as a non-standard resolution to the registry. Might this trick work for a larger resolution?

    First problem would be that such large resolution isn't supported through regular DVI (but only dual-link, like 2 DVI cables carrying one signal).
    Then... you'll be able to add any resolution as long as it's smaller than maximum, not necessary the other way.

    The specs of the mobility radeon 5650 say:
    # integrated dual-link DVI output with HDCP
    * Max resolution: 2560x1600
    # Integrated DisplayPort output
    * Max resolution: 2560x1600
    # Integrated HDMI 1.3 output with Deep Color, xvYCC wide gamut support, and high bit-rate audio
    * Max resolution: 1920x1200
    # Integrated VGA output
    * Max resolution: 2048x1536
