unfortunatly I owned a sony viao which died and wont boot. I am trying to salvage watever I can out of it. so here are my questions...

    I have a vgn-ax570g sony notebook
    1. can I get some sort of cable that will allow me to use the removable dvd drive that came with this unit?
    2. Can I use the HDD as external drives?
    3. what other componenets could I use and how?
    4. would you even recommend selling the unit "as is"? for parts?

    thansk for your advice...

I wouldn't bother trying to salvage the DVD drive, a replacement computer would have at least a DVD-RW.

Your laptop uses a SATA hard drive, so you can get an external enclosure to use with that drive for about $20, depending on where you live. If you can, look at NewEgg, they have a good selection of enclosures and are cheap.

If you want a more future-proof enclosure for the drive, look for one with USB and eSATA. Your next laptop might have eSATA, which is much, much faster than USB.
