Windows Update won't download SP1 for this SZ670 (V Business). Microsoft thinks there may be incompatible drivers or apps on it, but I don't know where to look.

Has anyone had problems -- or better, has anyone installed SP1 on an SZ6 without problems?

If problems were encountered, what caused them?

    Thanks

Strange. I downloaded Vista SP1 JA into Vista Home Premium on my 2nd partition no probs. This on a SZ94 (SZ6) with the latest Nvidia and Intel drivers.

You have to have updated drivers for everything in your computer befor Windows allows you to install SP1.

I have a SZ650, I installed SP1 several weeks ago when it was first released on MSDN, never had any problem... And didn't upgrade anything at all!

Hmmm?!?! I heard that SP1 has issues with the finger print reader on the sony laptop and that might keep you from upgrading. I did the MSDN one and it installed my desktop kept crashing more often after the upgrade. It was that TosBtShell.dll_unloaded. I couldnt up date either of these drivers as they tell you you need to visit sony's website. I ended up uninstalling SP1 to see if my desktop would stop crashing so often. No such luck the problem has carried over. also when you say everything has to be up todate does that mean you also installed the intel wireless drivers from windows update?

windows update wouldn't download/install SP1 for me automatically, so I downloaded SP1 manually and installed it. No problems whatsoever on my SZ780.

I did that install in the beginning but ended up removing it due to my desktop crashing more frequently. I heard that install was bigger then the win update version.

Only the installer file is physically bigger. The resulting size as it is installed onto you OS is exactly the same. The WU version only downloads the particular version needed for YOU. The standalone installer is suitable for all variations of the OS, hence it is larger.

It seems that Sony is not on the ball. Most Vaio notebooks have Sigmatel drivers (and some have Upek drivers) that are not compatible with Vista SP1. I hope Sony gets so many support calls that they wig out and do something about it.

this is from the sony site for the 650n/c

Cannot install the Windows Vista® Service Pack 1 (SP1) update using the Windows® Update utility. When using the Windows Update utility, the installed Microsoft Hotfix KB948343 may block the installation of the Windows Vista® Service Pack 1 (SP1) update if the following drivers are also installed:

Sigmatel Audio Version 6.10.5511.0 (or earlier)
    Intel Graphics Version 7.14.10.1322 - 7.14.10.1403
UPEK finger Print Version 1.9.2.99 (or earlier)

If you are experiencing this issue, you will need to download and install the Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Five Language Stand Alone KB936330 update from the Microsoft Download Center at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...6d-5ebb-413b-89c9-cb3d06d12674&DisplayLang=en.

the issue is that there isnt updated drivers for these components posted. very disappointed. to end my desktop from crashing I removed the toshiba bluetooth stack in add and remove programs. Seems to have been very successful

Hey thanks! I installed these no problem.

Unfortunately, however, my auto-update is still not offering SP1 :(

To add to these comments, I have a way to install the latest Intel graphics driver in order to get the SP1 to come throught with Auto Update. If you've tried on the SZ, as tbone points out, there is no updated Intel graphics driver available from Sony support. Furthermore, if you go to the intel site and download the latest driver (Mobile Intel® 965 Express Chipset Family) for the G31 (X3100 onboard graphics), when you try to install it (making sure your running your onboard graphics) the intel installer won't let you and will refer you to get the driver from the manufacturer's (Sony's) website. This sucks because it leaves you no nice way to get past what tbone points out is required, where he's given us two of the sources in the links.

    So here's what I did:

    1) download driver package from Intel to desktop:
    http://downloadcenter.intel.com/dow...dows Vista* Business, 32-bit version&lang=eng
which for me was driver version 7.15.10.1472 (I was stuck with 1244 before I think).

    2) Use WinRAR or some other extractor to unpack the downloaded file winvista159.exe to desktop\winvista_159

    3) Go to Device Manager > Display Adapters > Intel..., right click properties > Driver tab > Update driver > Browse my computer for driver software > Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer > Have disk > Browse > Desktop\winvista_159\Graphics\kit13732.inf (or similar if its a newer version) > open > ok > next > go through the install process

    4) Restart

If you installed the drivers that tbone suggested and then do this you can go to windows update and you should see SP1 immediately.

What we've basically done is tricked it into letting us install Intel's driver, which for me works perfectly, instead of having it force us to only install Sony's version (which is the same thing but with pixie dust sprinkled on top).

    You can see it here:
    Driver 7.15.10.1472.jpg

I hope this helps, and apologies if this solution or a better one has been suggested by someone else.

    EDIT:
I have since noticed some problems with my on-board graphics (occasional blacking out) which I can only attribute to the new driver or SP1+the new driver, so I'm switching it back. I hope SP1 won't have any problems with the original Sony version (perhaps that pixie dust was working its magic after all).

If any one comes up with a resolution, please post, cheers.
