So how do I decide whether to use it as 32 or 64 bit if it is either ? I need to download drivers for a Canon LIDE 60 and they are either 32 or 64 bit - does it make any difference which ones I get ?

64-bit depends on the Operating System. If you don't have a 64-bit capable OS, then 64-bit simpy will not work. Just get the normal 32-bit drivers for the scanner.
