Is This Malware Or A Sony Vaio Program?

[Note: I am trying to insert images but I do not see them in the body of the message. I hope forum readers can see them with my links.]

I have a VPC F1390X CTO which is a few months old. It is running McAfee SaaS Endpoint Protection 5.2.0 for Anti Virus protection which is updated daily. I have received no virus alerts.

For the past couple of weeks or so, I have been seeing the following screen pop-up which looks like I am trying to install a program which I am not:



When I check the Task Manager, I see that a process is running. Each time it has a different name but it is usually similar to the one today which was GLB525.TMP. The file is found in C:\Users\My Name\App Data\Local\Temp.

When I check that directory, I invariably find another file called GLFC8.EXE.

If you look at the file description, it says "Get Vaio Information" as well as "Sony Electronics, Inc (without the period at the end of "Inc.").



In the digital signature information, it says "Sony Corporation of America."



I do not allow the process to run and delete all three of these files but they keep coming back and the pop-up keeps interrupting my work.

Does anyone know if this is a legitimate Sony program? If so, which one is it and what should I do?

If not, does anyone know what's going on here?

 

That is part of the official Vaio program/driver/BIOS installer package (it packages the OEM drivers and BIOS tools, depending on what the update is).

It screws up, really easily. Is it legit? I've seen something with a very similar naming scheme. It always gave an error upon startup of a Sony update.

Is Vaio Update running? It should look like a small speach bubble with a power bolt (the icon should look like those two combined) in your system tray. Most likely, it's set to auto download and update.

 

The question begs to differ. If it doesn't work as intended, is it also considered Malware?

Yes, Vaio Update is running. I just checked the settings and it said that a new version was available. When I clicked on that the same image came up as before.

 

The real question is whether it is intended to work at all.

 

Given it's failure rate for me, I'd say... it's not intended to work.

 

From this day on let all under-performing software be known as underware. Will like to see owners of pink vaio p's and c's dropping such software. Hopefully color preference isn't corrupted in irregular ways =\
