I asked for a price quote for UK-Keyboard for the new Vaio Z from notebook.de and they asked 140 euros for it (including the tax and installation).

Is the keyboard really that expensive? Is it worth the bucks?
Could I find it with a cheaper price tag elsewhere, and install it myself?

Try calling some of the Sony's authorized service centers - they >might< be able to order it for you. I did that for an old Z, and if I remember correctly keyboard alone was ~100 EUR (or less).. But FPC cable was damn expensive.

140 EURs with installation is actually pretty good price if you can live with the fact that you pay for something you can do it yourself - I guess they will pay the keyboard ~70 EUR and add ~50 EUR of service fee + VAT.

I doubt Sony in the UK would sell that part to you directly.
They would most likely want to do that job for you.
They have a flat rate cost for jobs and your job would be probably the minimum which would be in that figure.
Also, as it is not covered under guarantee you probably would have to pay for shipping as well.

I just had a look at the UK website and Sony service seems to be improving. They now offer an authorised service centre in the UK. This has to be a very recent addition like over the past week.
Before there was no such thing in the UK. I've tried getting actual parts from Sony in the UK in the past and got nowhere with that.

I got these details from the Sony UK website for the autorised repair centre. May be give them a call.

Please find below the list of Sony service partners autorised to perform service on VAIO computers after expiry of the guarantee period.
In case your VAIO needs servicing after the guarantee period has expired or should your VAIO have suffered physical damage,
you are free to contact these service partners directly.

I actually hate UK layout pretty much and I've been trying hard to get US layout keyboards in the UK...

My SZ was purchased in the UK and I had to buy a US layout keyboard for that in a repair center in China.
