I need a new, powerfull notebook, about 15"
I took a look at Vaio and all the current models look and cost kind of cheap.
Should I try to pick one up now, or wait a bit in case something new comes out soon? Or maybe try some other brand?

you can't go wrong with a vaio, i have had an 11" for 5 years throwing it out now. And now I'm using a 3 year 17" that costed 3000 at the time and it still works amazingly fast.
And computer world is like real war, as soon as some brand releases a new idea, all other brands will start bombing the market. -
Karamazovmm Overthinking? Always!
wait, the Sandy Bridge (the new Intel chips) is just around the corner, they should be coming out january or february.
The thing is with that, you can either buy the new gen, or get the older one for a cheaper price, so you win either way -

I suspect CES in January Sony will showcase a new line of models, right? Didn't they unveil the Z1 series there last CES?
CES is like the first week in January, so it's just around the corner. -
Damn, i checked the Dell website and their XPS notebooks blow even the customized Sony Vaios out of the water.
Since when did Vaio become such crap?
Last time i bought from them was a very expensive and very hi quality TT-290 (which i'm still in love with).
But everything current is just plain blah. -

If, as you say in your first post, you need a laptop, you shouldn't wait.
If you just want one, wait. -
Wait for Microsoft to slap out another 40% coupon if you can wait. They actually take 40% off a laptop or two fairly regularly. The all encompassing 40% coupon is more rare.

And don't wait too long. After Sandy Bridge will be another fantastic "must have" item "just around the corner" (usb3?), leaving you constantly waiting. Buy when you need and can, within reason. -

It depends on your needs and the form factor you're looking at. Yes, some of the Dell configs are awesome for the money... but they don't have models in all form factors. Same thing for Vaio; their models are significantly better in some sizes/weights than in others. 15" appears to be a point where Vaio isn't very competitive at the moment. Conversely, at the smaller/lighter end of the spectrum, the situation is flipped.
For example, Dell has no equivalent to the Vaio Z. Core i7; 1600x900 or 1920x1200 LED; hybrid graphics; dual, triple, or quad SSD RAID; Blu-Ray burner... in a 3-pound package.
I wouldn't exactly classify that as "crap"... -
Sony have really nice look, size, and appeal. They're more like luxury notebooks. Like the above poster said, Sony is the only company ive seen to fit a 1080p LCD, core i7, graphics card, and blu-ray burner all in a 3 pound 13" notebook. Of course, the starting price is at $1899 but you get what you pay for. The EA series are 14" and although the XPS 14 has better specs for the price, it just doesnt have the same appeal to it as the Vaio. IMO, Sony Vaio is more luxury than performance
Is it a good time to buy a new Notebook now?
