Hello
I recently sent my Sony Vaio FW in repair, the hinge was squeaky and on the verge of popping off.
They took it in and repaired it under warranty, but there is still a little play in the cylindrical shaped housing of the power socket.
Is this normal? do all vaios carry this vunerability?
I keep my vaio on my desk and avoid putting any stress on the housing of the power socket.. the power button housing on the other side of the machine feels rock solid.

Not all Sony's, it's just a common issue on the FW.
Mine wobbled a bit as well, but never broke, and I ended up reinforcing it with some epoxy. Rock solid ever since. -
How would I do that?

Yea, the barrel hinges seem to be a bad decision on Sony's part. They're nice to look at, but not too functional in the long run.

Do you think I can get couple of years out of this machine?
-
As long as the barrel doesn't take a direct hit, you should be fine. Just be careful with it, even the epoxy won't stop it from snapping if it lands on it.
Plenty of people have had the FW since it's inception, many without any problems. I'm at 6 months so far, I plan on keeping this one a long time.

I have it restricted to my desk, only take it off the desk if im doing a tidy up.
Will it break just by putting in the power adaptor and taking it out after a while? -
The power adapter socket on my NW380 seems a bit wiggly. I just assumed it was supposed to have some "give" in it. The NW doesn't have the barrel hinge design.
-
It's a shame really, its the only problem I have with my laptop.
-
My new F series has the same problem. I called Sony TS and they had no clue about the issue. Told me to take it in to a Sony Style Center.

I think the sockets actually "free-float" a little inside of the mount.
Probably to minimize damage to the socket itself in the event of a fall.
Is it common for Sony Vaio's to have delicate power sockets?
