Ok so i got a vaio... then it got a virus. When this said VAIO boots it stops after the xp loading screen and then says "The Requested operation was unsuccessful" and then shuts off.

Sometimes however, i could get on. I once got on and did a system restore, which of course didnt work and now instead of saying an error message it either goes straight off or gives a blue screen of death,

Trouble is, i cant even reformat my hard disk because the virus or just general faulty sony design stops me from using my keyboard when the laptop boots, hence it gives a 5 second screen of sarcasm as it taunts the fact i cannot press any key to boot from cd.

Is it knackered or is there anything i could do to fix it?

Current options - throw it away
    - buy new hard disk

Could be bad RAM. You can try pulling out one stick of RAM at a time and see if it boots fine. Running memtest86 is also recommended.

hey all, thanks for the replies, the battery says the model is a pcg-7m1m so its not a new one.

I got it about a week ago off my brother who sent it in the mail, so may have been damaged in transit but i doubt it as it was running fine prior to going on the internet (after restoring using a vaio recovery disk from quite a while ago) so i presume it got a virus as i turned automatic updates off, and the home version of xp installed on it was rather old.

I cannot get into the BIOS either, as the keyboard does not respond to anything during boot, not even if i press delete, escape, f12, f10, or any other of the f keys :(

thanks again for all the replies

    Did you try hitting ESC?

Also, can you try using an external keyboard?

You say it is old model so it might be the pre SP2 XP problem.
You have to install SP2 before going on internet. Even if your first move would be Windows Update-to secure the system- download the SP2, it takes around 10 seconds online for XP without SP2 to get infected. So install XP, then SP2.
