I have recently bought an AR series Vaio, its a VGN-AR51SU. Is it normal for the fan to be on all the time even when you have no applications open ?

When no applications are open the fan is at an idle speed which is very low but its still running, obviously when you run things it gets slightly louder. I`m just a bit suprised it stays on all of the time even when your not doing anything, is this normal on an AR series Vaio ?

Mine Z does the same. I was also wondering this.

Not sure, but i think there was a Quite Mode profile before i rebuilt it.

Mine doesn't  Maybe it's a bios update sony implemented in newer models to prevent the defective nvidia chips from overheating.
Assuming you have a geforce 8400\8600?

Maybe it has something to do with your fan settings? I have mine set to "performance", meaning heat discharge priority, but still it doesn't run all the time (more often than in Balanced profile for sure).

I am having this issue with my Vaio CS laptop where the fan comes the left of the laptop goes on and off intermittently, and it always ends with a sound that resembles a door creaking. I find it very bothersome and when I went back to SonyStyle, the men there said this is to be expected of the newer laptops. My particular CS version does not have a super graphics card and I really only use it for surfing the net, watching videos, so
where do I go to adjust the fans to something less than performance level?

This is my second exchange and I am so fed up with this stupid fan right now.

Well if you can't find a cooling performance option in Vaio Power Management, you should probably try following the undervolting guide in this forum to help lower your CPU temperatures. It's worth doing anyway, actually, as it reduces fan noise and helps with battery life without breaking anything or affecting performance. :)

Do you notice the battery being spent quickier with the van always on?

Thanks. I will try this undervolting stuff out, but I'd really like to know, is it reversible? If after trying it out and it still doesn't fix the fan problem, I may just return it back to the store and I don't want to have caused any permanent damage to the laptop or have made any irreversible changes.

They tell me they reformat the os or something.

Nah, it's very temporary. In fact, unless you set RMclock to start automatically with Windows, you will automatically return to stock voltages after a reboot. :)

It's safe, but when you're doing to stress tests to work out the minimum usable voltage for your CPU, make sure all your work is saved in case you get a BSOD and have to reboot.

My AR is very quiet, I only hear the fans kick in when I'm gaming. even when i'm multitasking it stays dead silent. Id probably return the unit and swap it for another one (if you still can).

Otherwise that undervolting looks interesting. Might give it a try and see how much more life I get out of a charge.
