I have tried before - but you can never really get it all off, particularly on a Sony! If you can get all of your drivers lined up before hand, it is really not too difficult to do. As as long as you have the recovery disks, it is easy to correct mistakes.

I manually did all mine with add/remove programs and CCleaner. There may be a few things there that won't go away, but they don't affect anything, and I have tons more memory than I need. A lot of entry level users like me have had problems getting all the correct drivers back on the laptop after a clean install.

Use CCleaner to search for program remnants and unneeded registry entries. But, make sure you use the save feature of CCleaner CORRECTLY before you delete registry entries. My laptop runs lightning fast and wireless is also quick to connect. Got rid of Norton (NIS 2008 wasn't slow, but there have been problems with it, and it slowed my wireless connection) and got AVG Free and use True Image 11 for backups. Very Happy with my FZ. :)

FZ loads faster after SP1 download and with using AdBlock Plus websites are close to instant on.

It'll take you pretty much the same amount of time so just clean install.
