Hi guy, i am wondering how safe to bring laptop around (in bag) while it's in sleep mode. I mean, is the HDD inactive while sleep? If not, is it dangerous to move laptop around in bags?

(I come from desktop world and dunno if the rule applies here)

I would assume that it would be safe-since the screen closes over the keyboard/touchpad, there shouldn't be any way to wake it up.

Yes it's safe. They only thing still with power is your RAM (since it's volatile and you need your info. when you turn it back on)

if you are bringing along your sleeping laptop in a bag, make sure you doesn't put your laptop inside the bag for a long period of time, in case the air inside the laptop may be heated up by the laptop i guess... correct me if i'm wrong

no worries, everything should be fine. there's nothing to be afraid of! and the HDD is not active while sleep mode is on.

I would NOT keep the laptop in sleep mode if you will be moving it. Shut it off or place it in hiberation. The fans still may kick on and, depending on ventilation, it can get quite hot. I remember a forum user with a Dell notebook who had a problem with a somewhat melted/warped screen near where the inverter is placed in the bottom of the monitor.

Basically, it's not worth the risk; take the extra time to shut 'er down.

... do it all the time... never had my fan turn on as the processor is inactive there should be no heat really... even your vid card, and ram are 'inactive' there is just enough power going to the ram to keep the data there.

I always make sure that my computer is off or hibernating before putting it in a bag. There have been too many cases of computers waking up from sleep and then overheating. There have also been a few cases of Vista notebooks waking from hibernation but I've not read any recently so maybe Microsoft quietly patched Vista to prevent that happening.

All of my notebooks (Dell, Toshiba, Sony) remain quite warm while in Sleep mode. They will heat up even more if left in a bag for too long. Short trips would be fine, but I wouldn't pack it away for hours.

Here's my major warning from an SZ460. If I set it to go into sleep or hibernate and I close the lid before it is fully in the mode, it may or may not be four million degrees when I next pull it out of my bag. Take note to make sure everything is DONE before you close the lid and put it away. I've had a couple of times when I grab my bag and it's super hot, pull out the notebook and it feels like it's about to melt down. There is no fan on, and the battery is basically dead. I don't know what the issue is, but it only happens if I close the lid too soon when manually hibernating or sleeping (non-lid closure).

one other thing to point out ... in sleep (standby) mode, after the hibernate timer runs out, the system will wake up from sleep and then enter hibernation. harddisk will spin up and write data required for hibernation then shut down. i have also suffered some occasions of system hanging while trying to go from standby to hibernation, thankfully hdd was ok, only problem is severe heating up.
