I just purchase earlier this year a VPCZ21DGX/B and obviously, it has 4gb ram only. I feel so tempted upgrading to the SVZ13114GXX because of the 8GB ram plus the quick boost feature.

Honestly, I do not know if it is just too much to even think of upgrading considering I only use my laptop for is to do some minor Photoshop editing, Word, browse the net, and iTunes at times.. Minor software really... although i love opening many browsers/folders at the same time.

Can anyone let me know if it is necessary to upgrade and what advantages and disadvantages if I got the new model over this one I own? I hope it is not too much to upgrade (not basing it to "wasting money" but the "features" being not too much worth for an upgrade would be something I could take a look at closely)

I'd really prefer to keep my old one but I am just getting tempted with all the new features (quick-boost, hd webcam, double ram, ad etc...although other than that, everything looks practically the same, right.

What is so strange is I paid over $2800 for this and it included a dock and battery sheet, and this new svz13114 is costing to $1999 without a dock and battery sheet i believe. I haven't even used my dock even once since the time i purchased it.

Can anyone give me some advice and tips? some advantages and disadvantages? I can always keep my old dock, sell the old one and buy the new svz13114 with my old dock and battery sheet extender (if it fits underneath still).

Thanks everyone and I apologize if my questions have been answered.

No point unless you can return the Z2 and get your money back. When next March comes, Haswell will be sucessor to ivy bridge and so SVZ will become history....A new model of Z maybe and then you will be tempted to "upgrade" again ;)

not worth it. Throw in an SSD if you need a performance kick .... will cost you much less than the upgrade

Given the work you do with your Z2, I would not recommend upgrading. I ordered 8GB of RAM on mine but I've rarely seen the total memory used exceed 4GB. That's processing thousands of pictures in Lightroom, editing 40x60" high res images in PS, and rendering 1080P video in Premiere Elements. It doesn't sound like you are using software that would take advantage of the quad-core processor on the Z3. If you do any gaming, the Intel HD 4000 graphics would be an improvement.

As an earlier post said, wait for next year's upgrade. Perhaps we will have an all new Z then.

Also debating on buying a newer Z. Currently I have a VPCZ13. It handles everything well still. But I guess I want the newer frame and some more kick, especially in the graphics department. I have some options. There is a nice deal on a Z21+dock (only i5+4GB though) for ~E1200, a Z23 with quad-core for the same amount (although without dock, so HD3000, not really an option), and the IB SVZ basic model for pretty much the going price of ~E1500. I don't really need an upgrade I suppose. But occasional games do start to lag with the GT330M. I hear even the HD4000 is better. Decisions, decisions.

I guess you don't know the Z2? That is already equiped with Raid0 SSD ;)

I made the step from VPCZ2 to SVZ13, it handles the same in daily use. Both my machines had 1080p display, 8GB ram, 512GB Raid0 SSD Gen3 and the PMD. What makes it a world of a difference for me is the CPU, I went from dual core i7 to quad core i7 giving me so much more CPU power for video editing, photo editing and heavy database applications/virtual machines.
Having rapid wake is also nice, it's really ready to use within a second. So before you have opened up the screen, it's already at the login screen!

I have some questions about the z2.

Is it bad to leave the z2 hibernating for several days or even a week?
I know I should shut it down, but I forgot to do so before. Is this bad if it regularly happens?

Can I just put the external battery undeneath the z2 forever and instead of using the battery adapter to charge the external separately, can I just leave it attached underneath the laptop and just charge it using the AC through the vaio laptop? I dont like removing and attaching stuff all the time and don't mind adding some weight to it.. what do you think? will it affect battery external if it is there all the time?

No reason why hibernation should hurt your computer.

It's also OK to leave the batery sheet attached, although it's advisable to use battery care to extend its life (50% is ideal).

No problems in leaving it attached, except that it does not feel super thin/light anymore. It still is but if you know you can have thinner/lighter you might decide to not have it on all the time.

The Z2 in sleep all the time is also no problem, maybe reboot once every two weeks or so to refresh windows a bit. You will loose quite a lot of battery during sleep compared to the rapid wake of the Z13 though. This new baby can sleep for months and months and still wake up in a second. The Z2 will have drained its battery in a week or so of standby time. It's not bad per se, you wont loose any data because when it's almost empty it wakes up and goes into hibernation (saving all RAM to the SSD's). It's just anoying to pick up a unit, expecting to be able to work for 4+ hours and find it with an empty battery. If you keep the powerplug in all the time while sleeping, I don't see any issues.

    Thanks for that info!
What do you mean though by using "battery care"? is this a software or you mean to just take care of the battery? sorry to ask.lol

If I kept it plug, isn't it overcharging the battery? I heard from someone to remove the battery and charge it with the AC. I do not prefer to remove the internal battery too. Thanks.

It stops charging when it's full, no worries :) Removing the internal battery is not something done in 2 seconds anyway, it's held in place by 8 screws.

Run Vaio Control Center > Power Management > Battery

The software limits charging to a certain percentage (50 percent or 80 percent) to prolong the life of the lithium battery.

Is there a chance for my to get the PlayMemories Home for VAIO from this new machine? I would give it a try on my 2011 Z21 but it wasn´t preinstalled :(
