    2 year old Vaio PCG-GR390.
I get an audible click, and the cursor freezes.
It may click again and resume operation, but normally I have to Hard power down.

Is this a known issue? I have searched forums to no avail...
Is there a diagnostic for checking HD health?

If the drive is going out, Is there a better non Sony alternative?

    thanks

If you have to hard reset your system, there's a possibility that the drive is dying. Possibly a bad sector on your drive. There is also the possibility that it could just be the OS, maybe just needs to be reloaded. Usually the manufacturer will provide some diagnostics utilities to test your notebook. Another option is to find out what manufacturer makes your HDD and get the tools from their site. Replacing the HDD should not be a too difficult thing to perform. You nust need the instructions on how to do so. Someone may know how on this site. If replacing the HDD, you should be able to add a 5400rpm or even a 7200rpm HDD into the unit. This will increase your overall performance.

Thanks - the drive was bad and was replaced with a 40gb 5400rpm Toshiba HD.
