I've been scouring the local classifieds in search of a slightly smaller laptop than my current Dell Inspiron (15.4") for law school purposes.

I happened across THIS Sony TX. It looks very nice - if not a bit overpriced - but I wonder if the specs are still viable for everyday use as my one and only laptop...

Most crucially, I know nothing about Core Solo processors and can find little information about the TX850P generally.

    Any advice?

Again, it would be used mostly for school, web surfing, word processing, travelling...some iTunes, and the odd large-scale download.

Its a small laptop, so if you could get by with a small screen I guess its will satisfy most of your needs.

If you use it for general tasks like surfing, word, music, and downloads, the TX is fine. Its small size is an advantage if you travel a lot as well.

Core solo processors are the older generation processors prior to dual-core processors. This model has an ULV core solo, which consumes very little power (good battery life). I doubt it would run 7.5 hours as mentioned, but 4-5 hours sound very possible.

I think it is slightly overpriced though. I would value it at around 400-600, no more than 700.

hope this helps. any questions, feel free to pm me

    Thank you very much!

It is a nice little gadget, indeed, but it seems I should probably pass up on the laptop unless I can get it at a very good price. Makes sense, what with the all the EEEs and MSI's around these days with slightly superior specs and even better battery life.

    Am I correct?

Not quite, the Core Solo in the TX will easily outperform the Atoms used in most netbooks. The TX will also have the better battery life despite the Atom's lower power consumption, the batteries Sony uses for the TX are very high quality and hold a lot of juice. Its battery life is even better than the Vaio TZ series which is its successor.

However, some versions of netbooks like the EEE, Wind and Aspire One for instance use 2.5" hard drives, which will easily beat the 1.8" HDD in the TX in size and speed. That is the only factor the TX loses out to.
