The images I have seen suggest that the footprint of the new Z series is almost the same size as the SA series.

This would be a shame, because portability is not all about being thin - it's also about having a smaller footprint.

Please correct me if I am wrong on this issue (I hope I am).

Otherwise I will for the SA instead.

I'd say that they're roughly the same. The SA (or SB) is considerably larger than the VPC-Z, thanks to the much larger bezel. The new Z will likely be somewhere in between the SA and VPC-Z.

If you count the dock, they are somewhat similar, if no dock is included, its quite a difference is terms of size

    New Vaio S: 331mm (W) 224.5mm (D) at 23.9mm Thick
    New Vaio Z: 330mm (W) 210mm (D) at 16.65mm Thick
    Old Vaio Z: 314mm (W) 210mm (D) at 23.8-32.7mm Thick

So the new S & Z models are about the same width (331mm vs 330mm) but the new Z is smaller in both thickness and depth.

The old and new Zs are both the same depth while the new Z is wider but thinner.

The new S is about the same thickness as the thinnest part of the old Z while the new Z is thinner.

For a better visual comparison see the Front, Side and Top views of the three here.

Thanks Nautis for your excellent answer, and for setting up the comparison on the 'Size Easy' site.

It does seem that the new Z has grown significantly bigger - at least in terms of its footprint on the desk.

I also don't understand this mania for thin-ness. Just because Steve Jobs insists on all his devices becoming thinner and thinner, I don't see why everyone else must follow suit.

Agree! Id rather have a smaller footprint, really small bezel and a little thicker.. Weight could be the same, that has nothing to do with the thickness.

When he (Steve) pulled that thing out of a envelope, he started an, IMO, idiotic trend..

They could've stuck in a slightly larger screen so the bezel would be thinner then less people would complain about the larger footprint.
