I found a somewhat related thread about swapping the DVD for Blu-Ray, but I'm looking for this type of swap from the S series to the Z series.

On SonyStyle.com, the CTO Z doesn't come with a Blu-Ray reader option, but only with a writer, which is $500. The CTO S does come with a Blu-Ray reader option, at $150.

I was thinking I could buy the S now with the Blu-Ray option, and later when I get more $$$, the Z, then swap the Blu-Ray reader from the S to with the DVD writer from the Z and sell the S.

    Would that work?

As far as I know no... at least the bezel is totally different, I think the drives have different form.

One would think the S and Z use the same drive forms (9.5mm) since the BD RW drive is a $500 option on both systems whereas on other Sony machines it's a $150 option.

AFAIK the bezels should interchangeable because with those UJ whatever drives that people buy on eBay to put on their Zs, people just use their old DVD bezel and put it on the new one.

But I don't have any experience with replacing the drives on either so I can't really give you a good response.

Go into the S owner's thread and ask people what's the model of their blu-ray drive (or DVD drive) then look up the model info to see if it's a 9.5mm drive. if it is, then it should be compatible with the Z.
