    Was just doing a light reading on the built in CDMA WWAN from Sprint and I came across this:

    http://www.sarcasm.com/it/index.php...-on-the-dell-5720-sprint-evdo-broadband-card/

    I was wondering if anybody if anyone had activated it by any chance via SmartFi?

    Using regedit, I was able to navigate myself to:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Sony Corporation\SmartWi Connection Utility\Plug-in\GPS

    So is there built-in GPS on the Z, and can we use it for free?

    I don't know the answer to MegaMan's question; but I would like to add three subquestions to his question, being:

    If the US Z models indeed come with free, built-in GPS;
    - Is it indeed a free feature? Does it also work without a SPRINT contract?
    - Are only the US models coming with this feature, or does it hold for all models (also for the European and the Japanese models)?
    - Will the GPS feature on a US model work everywhere in the world or just within the United States?

    I believe the GPS key is just there because the same SmartWi software is used whether or not the Broadband module has GPS.

    I had a go anyway, but no dice.

    There should be an aGPS chip on the sprint modem. The FCC requires all cellphones to be e911 compliant, meaning that 911 can track the cell phone's location. CDMA phones use a built in aGPS chip, it is not a stand alone gps chip and it would not be able to track the phone with out cell service. aGPS uses cell tower location to assist in locating the phone. There should be an aGPS chip but it is not useful for location services.

    You can select GPS and turn it on when your WWAN is on. You cannot do anything if your WWAN is off - it is in the deselct mode.

    You will have to accept the waiver to disclose your information to Sony and Sprint in the agreement.
