Is this a good deal, or should I hold out?

Well, you are certainly paying a LOT for the Sony brand name. You could pick up an Asus S96J with similar specs but a MUCH superior graphics card (X1600) and a bigger hard drive (80 GB) for about the same price in Canadian. If you aren't going to ever run any games, the Intel GMA 950 is decent. If you want to play anything more complex than solitaire, however, that graphics card is basically unsuitable.

I should point out that the only reason I am going with Sony is the display. Otherwise, I'd just as soon get an HP.

My other top choice right now would be to buy:
    SONY VAIO VGN-FS8900M NoteBook
    Intel Pentium M 740(1.73GHz) 15.4" Wide XGA 512MB DDR2 533 80GB 4200rpm DVD±R/RW Intel GMA900

for $800 after rebates, and then spend $250 or so for a new hard drive and RAM.

Get the Sony FE. Pentium M was last year's technology. At least get Core Duo. Don't get any other brand name. Sony is the way to go. Their electronic products are simply brilliant, especially the FE, which I am a proud owner of. Right now is a good time to buy, considering the price reduction and the new model release.
