I bought a new customized VGN SZ140 from sonystyle and will be receiving it on Monday (04/17). I thought a lot about premium vs regular and since I couldn't find any premium to look at in stores I went for the regular.

The only thing that is troubling me is, I customized it with 2GB Ram. Now Sony charged me $ 670 for it, whereas the same 2GB Corsair from Newegg costs about $150. So I am paying almost more than $500 for 2GB. Is that fair? Why does Sony charge so much higher? Is it a different quality/brand of Ram than what is available in the market? Is such a premium that is being charged really fair or even worth it?

If not, I feel I would have been much better off getting the least memory from Sonystyle and then putting im my own 2GB for much much less... Any advice, either for me :) or SONY  !!! The more I think about this, the more I feel I should return this one and get another with least Ram, buy and put in my own 2GB and save some money for myself...

Can any of you SZ Owners please check what brand of RAM is installed in your system if it is not too big a deal. I will find out in a couple of days anyway when my SZ arrives...

There is barely any difference in RAM that you would buy from Newegg or from Sony. Sony has to buy it and then sell it to you for a large profit, while Newegg gives the lowest prices possible. It is always recommended to buy ram from newegg or similar rather then the manufacturer, which in this case is Sony.

500$ is a large amount of money, I would return it and get 2gb stick from newegg. If it was something like $100 then I wouldnt care but in this case return it.

OH, buddy, you got hosed. I would cancel and reorder, unless you have to take a loss for it- restocking fee, or something like that. You are talking about a lot of money there!

Sorry this happened to you SZMan...

I did the same thing a long time ago, and never again...

Always get the lowest amount of RAM possible and upgrade via an online reseller... it's MUCH cheaper that way.

You're luck you can customize... in Canada, you can only buy the pre-built SZ120 and 160, both with 2 x 512... which sucks.

I think that rationale of Sony and other companies that do this is that they've tested the RAM... surprisingly, some of the price of RAM depends upon if it's been tested and confirmed to be working 100%.

Sony can charge anything they want. And like Others like Dell, thats where they see the biggest returns in $$. I would cancel. $500 is enough for even me to wait.

The ram you can buy off newegg for a lot cheaper will be much better than the ram sony put in there. Also, sony probably re-branded the ram w/ their logo saying "replace w/ sony spare: xxx-xxxx-xxxxxxx" or something like that. In fact, sony probably put in some no name daewoo ram in there or something...I know dell did on one of my laptops...

Frankly speaking, I think you are right cvec7. From my own research I could come up with some "Nanya" brand memory made by Elixir and installed by Sony. And they charged $670 for this 2GB Module?

Anyway I am planning to get 2*1GB modules from some companies I could shortlist. Either of Corsair, Crucial, PQY or Mushkin...

Another question that comes in is what speed, DDR2 533 or DDR2 667? I think both will fit in and without problems, but on the one hand I get tempted to go for the DDR2 667 with some advantaged maybe, and on the other it has a Latency of 5, which I read somewhere slows down the throughput for a given set of factors...
