Hi there. I've noticed that the sz6 and sz7 ranges both have dual graphics, gma950 for battery live and nvidia something for performance and it switches between the two.

Question is, can they both be active at the same time? If i buy a dock (which should have a dvi and vga connector), this will connect to two external monitors, then the laptop screen itself could be run with the gma950.

    is this possible?

First of all it's a X3100, and second, no, it can't be done, how could you run two graphic cards on one laptop at the same time?? (they are not SLI enabled or something)
Oh and there is no DVI on these latops, only VGA...

that's why teh dock comes in useful. it has dvi and vga.

is it possible to use the two outputs of the dock at the same time with the nvidia graphics? It's powerful enough to run two screens, but is it possible to turn the laptop one off and switch it to one of the outputs?

Sorry I can't help on that...
What I'm sure of is that you can't run the two cards at once...

how does it depend on the resolution? I've got a laptop here with only intel gma950, and it can run it's own screen at 1280x800 and a 20" at 1600x1050 no problems (obviously not for anything graphicallyl intensive).

surely dedicated graphics can handle two screens (say a 19" and 20") at 1280x1050 and 1600x1050?

does anyone know for sure? This would be my ideal setup bceuase I love dual monitors but hate having one really low and small.

you can only use ONE of the outputs on the dock at a time... trust me, I do this for work EVERY day... I have an sz 371 docked with a matrox vga splitter plugged into the dock, I then have two 1280x1024 monitors plugged into the splitter in addition to the notebook's screen. It's the most screen real estate you can get... native screen + 2560x1024. I really wish it would drive two 1920x1200 monitors though... I'd rather the card could do that instead of play games lol.

if you want triple monitors you can buy a matrox dualheads2go and it'll output to 3 screens(2 with it and 1 on your laptop

Read up one post, that's what I do...

I know they also make a 3 way splitter... problem is, I can't get the computer to put out any larger resolution than 2560...

A guy called visioneer in this thread:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=119775

seems to think it's possible. (he's the one showing the pictures of the dock).

When there's two monitors connected to the dock, do they both come up as external displays in windows? or does it only show up as one extra display? I read somewhere that if there are three displays shown (i.e. two external and the laptop's), then it's possible, as it means there are three different connections. Then the laptop screen has to be physically closed (not just switched to external) for the vga port to activate at the same time as the DVI port. maybe this has been missed? (i'd certainly not think of actualyl closing the lid).

when you use the splitter, it shows up as one monitor externally connected, and the native display... as far as I know, there is no way to use both external vga and external dvi at the same time...
