Is your Vaio Z Series Laptop your main computer or secondary computer?

Do Vaio Z Series laptop owners use their laptop as their main primary computer or a secondary computer? Do Vaio Z series owners also have a desktop pc as their primary computer and use their Vaio Z Series as a secondary computer? Or is your Vaio Z Series laptop your one and only computer that you always use? Is it comfortable using the 13 inch screen for long periods of time?

Reason i ask is some people have more then one computer and some people just have one. I'm just wondering if the Vaio Z Series laptop is a good choice as a main computer since it's got good specs and it's nicely portable but will the 13 inch screen be ok to use for long periods even at the higher 1600 x 900 resolution?

I don't understand why you would have to have a "main" and a "secondary" computer. That's like saying if you have two daughters, one is main and one is secondary.
I have two (well, seven) computers. Which one I use depends on where I am, what I am about to do, and a bunch of other factors. If I am going to play a 3D FPS, I tend to use the computer with the fastest 3D card and a couple of nice big monitors that can fill my view. If I'm going to read my morning e-mail, it doesn't matter whether I do it from a laptop or a desktop. I do it where I have my coffee. And if I want to read an e-book, that's much more comfortable to do in the recliner, with my Z.

Neither computer is main. Whatever works best for the task at hand. Let them complement each other.

Well, I have 3 computers. 1 is My top of the line PC Desktop for gaming and graphic design purposed. 2 is my Laptop Z-91 for working purposes and watching some movie before I go to sleep on my bed. 3. is my TZ laptop that I use for meeting and other purposes.

In my opinion, sony Z is very good. They are light weight and have high screen resolution. I have no problem watching movie and browsing internet for hours with my Z-91. So, if you want to buy Z series, go ahead. You will not be disappointed.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm sure i won't be disappointed as it's a quality computer with very good specs. I don't need a very high end graphics card as i'm not a gamer but i like to watch movies on my computer so hopefully the graphics card that comes with the Vaio Z will be good for that. The only thing that's made me a bit hesitant about going ahead and buying the laptop is if the 13 inch screen at 1600 x 900 resolution will be comfortable to use for long periods. Hopefully it will be ok.

13" with small resolution is not good but 13" with high resolution is good.
Honestly, I spent more time watching movie with my Z-91 rather than my desktop that I can switch the display to my 46" Sony TV.

What's it like reading text and word processing on the 13 inch high resolution screen is it comfortable?

FWIW, my Z is my main computer -- I have a company given desktop at work, a company given laptop for work from home or other places, but Z is the only computer I paid for and does everything else (sometimes work, too) I need to do.

I have been using 12"-13.3" laptop without external monitor as my main computer since grad. school (when it is pretty ambiguious what is work, school or home) and it has been almost a decade now that I have not use anything bigger than that as my main computer. Obviously, I can't play some 3D demanding games in high setting, but those are not my thing anyway. Other than that, I have really no problem.

    It is my third computer.

My first is a quick desktop with dual 22". My second is an old FJ with 15". The reason my Z is third is because I just wouldn't want to use a thirteen inch screen for a long period of time unless I'm out of town. In that case, the 13" Z is perfect, because it is lightweight and the screen will do well for one-two-three weeks. I just couldn't use my Z as my main computer without an external monitor/keyboard/full sized mouse.

    That's just me.

Oh, I should mention that my Z is a 1366x768 res which is easier on the eyes.

When i get my Z series i might get a seperate screen, keyboard, mouse and docking station so it's more comfortable to use for long periods. It's got enough power for what i need so unlike other people i wouldn't spend extra money to get a more powerful desktop pc aswell.

I don't see the point for most people to have a laptop and a desktop pc. I couldn't be bothered transfering all my files and stuff between them all and keeping them all up to date with various software and internet security and so on, i don't have the time for all that. Plus it's a waste of money i could spend my money on other things and it's far easier and simpler just having one computer.

I think if your interested in getting a laptop get a decent one and that's all you need. A decent laptop nowdays has enough power for an average user. If you want the comfort of a desktop pc then get a seperate keyboard, mouse and screen and plug it all into a docking station and when your on the move just unplug and take your laptop with you. It's far simpler and cheaper to have one decent laptop then to have a laptop and desktop pc i think. Also all your files are in one place and you just have to worry about only keeping one computer up to date.

^ Can YOU output to two external monitors at the same time?

Sorry, but a laptop is fair from a desktop for a working environment. For a home user, I can agree to a certain extent.

A similarly spec'ed desktop will always whip a laptop.

As i said i was talking about an average user and an average user doesn't output to two external monitors at the same time personally i don't see the point of that. One monitor is more than enough for most people. For an average user a decent laptop can easily handle anything that is thrown at it.

If a desktop is similary spec'ed to a laptop then the performance will surely be similar. I think you ment to say a similarly priced desktop will have better performance to which i agree but are you going to travel around with a desktop i don't think so.

My Z590 is my one and only computer. I ditched desktop since 4 years ago. My S, TX and TZ were also my only computer when I owned them. I'm fine with the screen. I like the screen of the vaio, S, TX and TZ all have glossy screen and Sony does well to limiting reflection. Z is even better with a special "glossy" screen. The viewing angle is great too.
One thing I don't like about all the VAIO I've had is their speakers. My 5800XM sounds better than them. Sometimes, I do feel that they are not loud enough.
One thing I don't like about the Z is that it's actually a kind of thick.

My VGN Z 35X will be my only computer when i get it. It's far more powerful then my current desktop so it will be really good for me.

I believe your Z590 comes with a 1600 x 900 resolution screen. How do you find it for reading text for long periods?

    * Touch Wood* I'm not cursing you or anyone else.

Try being in a situation when your one & only notebook fails, you need to complete an assignment on it, you don't have any access to another computer, & so on & you'll understand why people have more than one computer (in most cases)... :(

That seems crazy to spend a load of money on more than one computer just incase one fails. I've had quite a few computers over the years and not one has ever failed on me. So there's no way i would get a second computer incase one fails. To me that would be a waste of money.

I'm not saying that you or anyone else had to have a 2nd computer in case anything fails. This all depends on how much you depend your computer & what it is used for. For some people, being without a computer for a few days when he/she had to send theirs in for repair could cause them lots of money...

I am actually thinking of getting this. I am finishing my 3rd year of college.

You guys think this would be good as an only computer with maybe an external monitor?

I would want this laptop to at LEAST last 3 years. I dont really play games so that is not an issue for me.

The text is about the same size of TX (11.1" 1366x768). I guess I've got used to the size already when I have my TX. I don't have any trouble reading on TX, TZ and Z screen. I just read, I don't have to do anything.
I'm very happy with the high DPI. Actually, the 1600x900 is the reason I buy the Z. I can see more stuffs on a screen and keeping about the same DPI as the TZ.

PS. I don't wear glasses so I guesss I'm gifted with good eyes.

My Z is one on my "main" computers. I have 2 mac mini's and my Z. I use my Z for my computer repair business and my mac's for web design and daily use. The Z is a very powerful computer, most peoples newer pc's are under utilized. From what I see in the field most users check email, surf the net, and do some basic office work. There is no need to have 4 cores, video cards that can play video games at the highest setting and enough ram to run 4 vm's...saying all that, if you do play games, run lots of vm's and do video editting then maybe a secondary pc is for you.

I have a desktop with a 26" dell monitor, an EEE PC 901, and a living room pc hooked up to my 40" Samsung lcd and I have a Z690 (as well as a few older comps). Can you guess which I use the most? Yes, the Z. This thing is unbeatable in its weight/power/battery combination. There are plenty of light computers that are half the price of this thing, the reason I spent the extra money (aside from the awesomeness) was to have it be my "Main" computer, meaning the one I jump to and rely on the most. I mean, I look at the z series as a machine in a class of its own. Its light, has good battery, has an amazing screen (if you're buying a z without the 1600x900 res you might as well just get something else) and when you need it you can pump out some pretty decent graphical horsepower. Also, I don't see people mention this enough but the Z series has an AMAZING keyboard. I really think this is just the most balanced and amazing notebook you can find. If only it weren't so expensive I would recommend it to everyone.

Oh and I spend countless hours using my z and the screen has never given me any issues. If anything its hard to go and use something with a lower pixel density.

My z690 can beef out decent gaming and I can run 2-3 VM's without it dying on me. If someone can kill this thing then they already have a secondary workstation at home :p
