Hi. I am new to this forum so not sure if anyone else has asked a similar question. But I just bought a second-hand Sony Vaio TZ 390, which came with Vista. I updated to Windows 7 and installed all the drivers. Everything seems to work but I cannot get the Vaio TZ to output to the external display. What happens is the external lcd gets a signal initially when I turn on the Vaio TZ (connected to the lcd) but it loses the signal shortly after I log into Windows 7. Btw, the lcd I use is a Samsung 2333HD. Any comments would be most appreciated. Thanks for reading.

Hi. So i figured out what was meant by windws key + p but still the laptop doesn't output to the lcd. Like I said, the laptop starts outputting to the lcd when i turn on the laptop but ithe lcd loses the signal when the windows log in screen appears and I can't get anything to output to the lcd afterwards. Think it must be a simple software issue but not quite sure what it is. Please help me! :(

if you right click the desktop and go screen resolution, do you see 2 monitors or just 1? Have u tried unplugging the monitor cable and replugging it in after you log on? It should detect right after plugging it in if its set up correctly.

Thanks for your suggestion but still no image on my monitor. I see 2 monitors when I go to screen resolution. I've been reading that intel gma 950 does not support 1920X1080 resolution. Has anyone else had success connecting a vaio tz or tx to an external monitor with this resolution? many thanks in advance.

if you see 2 monitors at screen resolution, can you change the 'multiple displays' setting on the monitors and see if you get anything? I dont have anything that high resolution so I cant test 1920x1080 for you.

Is your Sammy a LCD TV? That could be your problem. You might only be able to output such a high resolution on a proper computer monitor.

EDIT: What connection are you using? Have you tried DVI-HDMI?
Is the refresh rate set correctly? Does it work at lower resolutions?

Thanks for replies and sorry for the late response. Had an exam yesterday. Well, my Sammy monitor has hdtv functionalities though I am not sure if it is technically a lcd or hdtv. Is there a way I can connect dvi-hdmi? Currently, I am connecting using the vga port on my vaio tz. I think the refresh rate is set at 60 hertz.

Tried the multiple monitor setup but no luck. I can't get the 1920x1080 option in my screen resolution setup, just the native resolution of the vaio tz display.

Also, I just used the Vista drivers when installing Windows 7.

You can use a DVI to HDMI cable - try to borrow one, as there's no guarantee that it'll work either.

What about lower resolutions, any luck?

Thanks again for your reply. I tried lower resolutions but no such luck. I still a little bit confused about the dvi-hdmi thing. I don't think there is a dvi port on my laptop, only vga. Or am I wrong? So do I need to connect vga-dvi-hdmi? Is that possible?

Sorry, my mistake. Forget about the HDMI-DVI - I was getting it muddled up with the TT model! If you can't even get a lower resolution to display, then you need to find out if it's the laptop or the monitor that's giving you the problem.

A Vaio TX (older version of the TZ) with Intel GMA 950 can do 1680x1050 on a Dell 2407WFP monitor. While a Vaio X with Intel GMA 500 can do the full native resolution of 1920x1200. So, your Vaio TZ ought to be able to manage 1680x1050 on your Samsung display.
