I started and participated in posts on this issue in the past.

I use my macbook pro in bed and planes a lot. I am not a touch typist, and don't type enough to even care to learn. I am better than hunt and peck though.

Anyhow even your lowest end smartphones seem to realize the backlit keyboards are necessary.

To me it goes hand in hand with "portability."

Over the past year, Dell now has several models either with standard backlighting, or as a $25 option. $25!!!!

Why can't Sony do this? How many people other than me want the Z, or that new X, but won't buy it for lack of this feature? Particularly the X: I was in the sonystore and ready to buy it, but even in that model, no backlight.

happy holidays to all!! i still read this message board whenever i am in the market to change laptops....every few months!!

Maybe because its one more component that can break?

And onestly, you shouldn't use your computer in the total dark for the sake of your eyes.

Else: The screen provides enough light... (except on minimum brightness)

I only see backlighting as a gimmick.

And speaking of phones my phone only lights up the keyboard when its dark - when its light it keeps the light off.

I feel like a loser when I use my computer in the dark... and yeah, bad for your eyes.

I liked SZ and Z but I work lot in dark conditions, it is essential to have proper keyboard, Thinkpad solution is a joke and I wouldnt use Dell even if paid for it. So if there is no Vaio with lighted keys, will drop pc altogether and use Macs only.

I agree backlight should be standard - students and journalists like myself are often taking notes in a darkened room and it's annoying not to be able to see even if you're a decent touch typist. I got a little LED light that plugs into a USB port - Staples, 9 bucks - and it provides just enough light for the purpose.

    I second that.

I use the F keys and prt sc, insert keys a LOT. Sure, I know where they are, and I would never actually use the backlit feature. But it sure looks sexy! Considering we all paid $2k+ on a vaio (equivalent to a macbook pro).

Heck, flame me if u want. I want my backlit keyboard! :p

Agreed. It would be really handy for me as I type in dark environments such as theatres and film classrooms.

Especially backlighting on the CW would be fantastic for me.
