Hi, to everybody. I'm a newbie here and have a new Sony VGN-SR490 that I have had for less than a week. It came installed with Vista 64-Bit Home Premium. There is an item on the desktop that I cannot get rid of nor do I know what it is called in order to disable it in the msconfig startup. I will attempt to attach a pic of the item that I am talking about, but I'm neither a techie nor real proficient at doing anything out of the day-to-day type activities on the pc, so please bear with me. I've managed to change the "buttonbar" to a floating toolbar, but that is as small as I can get it. I know it is a minor thing, especially compared to the problems I have run into while moving from my old XP machine to my nice, new Vista machine , but that is where I'm at now. Trying to get everything looking the way I want it to look, and I REALLY want to get rid of this toolbar! Any help would be greatly appreciated!! BTW, sorry for rambling on so much...will try to be more to the point in the future

That's your mode switch. Disable by uninstalling VAIO Mode Switch or going into Setting and selecting Hide button blah blah blah. Should do a clean install on any new computer anyways.

If you choose to hide it, whenever you boot up the computer it will show up for a few seconds, then fade away. But if you want it permanently gone, then like lowteckh says, you can uninstall the Mode Switch, that's the software controlling it. (I find it somewhat useless, too, for now)

Really? I find it SO useful! I love it because I can keep my desktop almost completely clear (except for my recycle bin and 1 folder containing my games shortcuts) and I put the things I use most in the mode switch.

I like a clean desktop, too! The reasons I can't find it to be very useful is that if it's hovering in the background, I have to minimize everything to see what button corresponds to each icon. I can move it to an edge and have it always stay on top, but I forget if I can control its translucency. What I use instead is something like Launchy, a quick Alt-Space and then type in a few letters, press Enter to launch the program that I want. I'm so used to this now and it's fast, lets me index what type of files/shortcuts I want.
