    Hi all,

my apologies if someone has posted this somewhere already, but I believe the new platform SZ has just come out in Japan :)

    http://www.jp.sonystyle.com/Style-a/Compare/Sz/index.html

    http://www.vaio.sony.co.jp/Products/SZ5/

    http://www.jp.sonystyle.com/Style-a/Product/Sz94/index.html

I haven't had time to have a close look, but the first thing I've noticed is that the Vaio "Owner made" offers a 7200 OR 4200 rpm 200GB HDD - the 4200 has been a big complaint on the forums so this comes as a big welcome. You can flick through:

    http://www.vaio.sony.co.jp/Products/SZ5/spec_ownermade.html

Also it is denoted the "SZ5" not SZ6, and now has the brown tint raw carbon as does the US model.

    Enjoy!

A couple of days later than I thought.

I have had a bit of a look through the available customisations, and I like that they give you more options.

I'm glad that you can now choose if you want to FeliCa port or not.

It is also a bit weird that you can't choose premium brown, unless you also get the camera.

Also, the SZ84 silver version is u-g-l-y.

Are the current SZ premiums flat black like this? [IMG]

    And not the dark metal?

Machine translated Japanese is pretty hard to read but you get the idea.

Nice pictures of the keyboard color comparison on that site though.
No close up shots but you can see how the color of your keyboard will contrast with black on silver or silver on black.

Oh and I ordered the sz680 CTO with a black keyboard. fwiw

Its out! Time to order

Gotta love the size of Enter key on the Japanese Keyboard!
http://www.jp.sonystyle.com/Style-a/Product/Sz94/index.html lets you customise and shows the total cost. Pretty nice setup. Seems like you can add a sony express TV tuner. Althrough maybe only works in Japan.? Also I read somewhere the webcam is madatory on the Carbon Fibre lid due to the manufacturing process, makes sense i guess from the complexity of the design. Hmm have no idea which Vista version to choose. Whats peoples experience with the Hybrid Drives?

Be careful though: "In the midst of preceding reservation sale".
    Only pre order sofar.

    Configure your own here: http://66.249.91.104/translate_c?hl.../Vaio/S/sz94us_ns_s.html&prev=/language_tools

I did some calculations, the way I see it it does not make much (or any) difference wether I order from Japan or US. (using Pricejapan's pricing)

Not too sure if i really like the brown premium carbon. I prefered TZ style i think.

Good idea. Might wait a little then. Hmm and then i forgot about import tax. So it probably work out the same price wise. Also the brown premium carbon lid can`t be shown properly in a picture. It has blue speckle sparks in it. Hmm kinda hard to explain. Probably best to find a store that has one on display. All for show really but seems to be quite popular from what the ginza rep told me.

If you want to get an idea of what the brown tint looks like, I'm pretty sure it's exactly the same as the finish on the premium Type G. Same brown tint with metallic speckling and raw carbon tow showing through. It's quite subtle when you see it under normal light.

Can anyone confirm this brown premium carbon is the same as TZ premium carbon?

I have seen the TZ premium carbon and the Type G premium carbon up close. The models I saw, which were Australian models, and also agreeing with images on sony.jp, were as follows:

    TZ premium carbon:
Black tint with blue speckle, diagonal carbon tows
    http://www.vaio.sony.co.jp/Products/TZ2/gallery.html

    G premium carbon:
Brown tint with blue speckle, vertical carbon tows
    http://www.vaio.sony.co.jp/Products/G2/gallery.html

Images that I have seen suggest the SZ has the same brown tint as the type G, but with diagonally aligned carbon tows similar to the TZ:
    http://www.vaio.sony.co.jp/Products/SZ5/gallery.html

The only unknown is how brown it is. I think it looks quite different under different lighting conditions.

The previous premium carbon SZ (SZ4) I saw in Japan was the same black tint as the current TZ - so I guess they decided to go for a change.

We need some US people to tell us what the SZ premium looks like up close :) (hint)

I read the comments users gave on both the TZ and the SZ, and there were some asking for the brown colour for both models. I guess they decided to go ahead with it, considering there was demand and it was popular.

Personally, I'd prefer the premium black, but I could live with the brown.

ok, I went to SonyStyle (in Auckland, NZ) today just-to-view-around.

I can definitely say that 13.3inch SZ is nicely made machine!. I really like the keyboard in SZ as compared to TZ.. I can 'feel' the press and the release in SZ whereas I can not really feel for TZ... Although I do type around 80-100WPM. I can only do max 75WPM for TZ....

well, I don't know, I havent used macbook before, but people seemed to praise TZ keyboard somehow..? At least I wish they would have made the key more 'bouncy' or 'clikable'
