I hear the ship date for the FW and SR is 7/28/08. I was just wondering how long the delivary time rate normally is by the time it actually ships. I need a laptop by Aug. 4, and I just wanted to know if I could get the FW or SR by then.

    Responses appreciated!

Pre-sale item available on or about 07/28/2008. We will notify you by email. Your account will be billed when product ships.

That's what it said when i order my SR. Thus, it will ship days after, then take a couple days (around 5 or so) to get to you. i would think you would get it the week of the 4th maybe on saturday the 2nd if you are lucky (if they ship sat?). when i orded my CTO FZ last year, it came in less than 2 weeks from the day I ordered till it arrived on my door step. i think it was 10 days total from the moment i clicked PURCHASE.

by the way, I called Sony just for the hell of it and they said the Z is shipping mid-late august. while SR is shipping late July/Early august.

suck it up, add some girth and .5 pounds to you and just get the SR if you are worried about time. if you are old the extra .2 inches might help your eyes too, who knows.

and the stamina switch is overrated. even sony site says it gives about 30 minutes extra...

just turn the brightness down and put on lower power mode, simple. dont need hybrid fancy schmancy

Funny you mention it. I was wondering if I should have waited to get the Z since it has some advantages... BUT for 400 extra dollars..are they worth it???

Here is why I chose the SR over Z:

    1. Size. The palmrest is going to be about 1 inch shorter on the Z. I have big hands. I need the space I can get.

    2. Personally, I want larger things on my screen...but at a comfortable resolution. none of that tiny stuff... don't want to ruin my eyes. I saw the SZ in store and that was the LOWEST I would go. I know .2 inches isn't much though but the Z has higher resolution though..smaller text.

    3. Graphics card. I don't trust NVidia, sorry. never have and recent news of their mess up that gets released ONE year later... unacceptable. What I understand, the ATI card in SR is more powerful as well, and I plan to do some gaming.

    4. Button size. The Z looks like it has tiny left/right clicks. not my thing for my hands being big.

    5. 400 dollars more for the Z. I was pushing the line with the SR!

    6. Shipping. Z is coming out later. I need mine ASAP.

HOWEVER, reasons I was considering Z but with logical thought I had:

    1. Seems to look nicer. Screen is probably better and overall look looks sleeker and more black.

    2. suck it

    3. Battery life probably better on Z. But at expense of GPU power. Stamina/speed mode is a catch and a joke. For god's sake just lower the brightness or put on lower power mode. no need for 2 GPU just to squeeze 30 or less minutes out.

    4. DDR3. But honestly, would I notice a difference?

    5. HDMI port. But I never used one or plan on using it in my life.

There you have it. I may be missing some stuff but I don't care. I just want my SR in my hands already!

@DUKE2007: Z has only 2 USB ports. If you look closely at the diagram on Sony's website, USB (1) and USB (2) are just meant the first and second USB port on that laptop.

Good question. As a business strategy it makes sense to first mass produce stock that you can ship in volume vs. custom builds that are a trickle comparatively speaking. Since the new Intel graphics chips are in short supply (this is why there is a Z delay vs. SR & FW), they are working with a limited supply of final motherboards. Also, it takes time to build out the CTOs. And they usually add a week to the estimate so you don't go canceling on them when it doesn't ship on the exact date. The estimate I received for my order today is August 15 but I expect it to ship sooner than that. Believe me, Sony is busy as hell right now in their CTO plants in California.

You think i could possibly have the z by aug 20th, w/ next day shipping? Ive asked this so many times i know but i just dont want to order an SR and then have u guys getting the Z be4 the 20th or on, because then i would totally regret my decision.
