    So I just bought a new z128.

However, what are the steps I should take before I start installing everything I want?

Should I do a format and fresh reinstall, then take an image of the disc, or should I just use add/remove programs. (if so, what should I remove)

How do I go about optimising my machine?

Also, am I able to extend my monitor onto my 24inch screen and run a dual monitor setup?

    Thanks

Just remove what you don't want. I pulled off norton, works, office, roxio, and all the picture motion browser stuff.

I find a fresh install is a major PITA and really doesn't yield much (if any) benefit.

Frankly the machine is damn fast with everything on it.

For your monitor, yes it's compatible and you can run dual no problem...noting that the max resoltion from hdmi is 1920x1080.

My 24inch runs on analog via 1920x1200.
However, it seems to come out funny. It is not clear, and I cannot run a different DPI to the laptop

The monitor seems to be 'refreshing'

try a better vga cable and adjusting the phase and clock settings on the monitor. 1900x1200 is it's native resolution?

Yes, it is its native resolution.

If you go to Vaio Control Panel, there is a Display section I believe that has some adjustments you can make for a second display via HDMI. Maybe check there and see if you can tweak anything.
