If you get the SSD, the performance is equal to a 2.0GHz Core Duo. :)

My previous Thinkpad T60P was a Core Duo 2.0 GHz, 2GB RAM and a 7200rpm drive running XP. I find the TZ with only a ULV 1.2GHz to be slightly faster than the Thinkpad, and this is running the resource hog Vista OS.

Files transfer aren't as fast, but opening and accessing programs is noticeably faster.

I'm very surprised at the small performance boost sans the graphics part over the T60p. Sony did a great job on this little guy.

For those that have the mic working, did you have to do anything? When I go into the control panel, sound icon, I don't see any option for the mic though so I'm a bit lost. I'll try to play around with it more when I get home.

I'm assuming for those that can record, you're not attaching a mic to the mic port right?

I find my tz pretty fast too. The only time where it is sluggish is when I'm outputting to both my external monitor and the lcd and playing a movie on the lcd while working on the external monitor. Moving windows around on the monitor is noticeably sluggish.

I've seen this bug before on my ASUS. It has to do with Vista and the way it handles drivers. Whenever I connect USB devices to my TZ, I have to toggle the Bluetooth/Wi-Fi switch off/on to get my mouse to work again.

On the ASUS, I would sometimes lose my sound driver alltogether. It's a drag, but that's Vista for you. We'll have to suffer through November with these bugs by the sounds of things.

Does everyone have the issue with the power adapter not always working unless you jiggle it? or is that an isolated case?

well good news, I downloaded the driver for TZ160C and reinstalled it and now all of a sudden, I'm able to record sound.

One weird thing I noticed was that I didn't have the driver downloaded before I uninstalled. After I went to the device manager and uninstalled the sound driver and rebooted. Upon going into windows, a message popped up on the lower right corner stating that the sound driver has been successfully installed. where is windows getting the driver file from? I already erased the hidden partition containing all the drivers.

Any driver that is installed gets cached in the windows system folders. Even though you deleted the device its driver remained cached.

I've just recently purchased a TZ with 32GB SD, I am over the moon with my purchase, best laptop I've ever bought!!, the only minor quibble is the crappy graphics card.
Anyways wonder if someone could answer a question. formatted sd and installed clean copy of vista, all ok, bar instant mode not working without booting into windows? Also I have the system receovery disks I can access the applications disk, but will not load launcher, any ideas????

I placed an order for my TZ90 on dynamism. Turned out to be $2700 shipped after I mentioned the price japan price. Its still $300 more, but the fact that it comes with a 3 year warranty, and its in the US, makes it worth it.

I had it working on my fresh rebuild - sony utilities dll, event, etc and it was working.

Somehow it stopped working. So I uninstall all 4 apps - reinstalled it and it's still not working - ---- argh.

I am in toronto too, guess I am not the only one with the tz90 anymore :) I orderd mine from Dynsaim and got it next day from fedex. I was charged something like $220 bucks cdn from the import. Only got dinged with GST. Brokerage was inculded in the shipping cost because it came by air, and computers are duty free thanks to NAFTA so no worries there. Just GST

Excellent. I'm hoping to be the third person, sent off an e-mail to Dynamism mentioning how their price is $750 more than Conics.net for the configuration (and accessories) that I want, so hopefully they'll lower the price by a few 100 and I'll place my order.

Definitely not looking forward to paying taxes when I receive it though..

Just a question for you guys since you placed yours through Dynamism and are located in Canada. When I e-mailed them before they said that since I'm in Canada, I'll have to cover the shipping to their location in case I need warranty service.... doesn't that just seem very unappealing since shipping to and from Canada is just slightly more? It almost makes no different from ordering from Conics.net and shipping it to Japan for service since only the shipping price will be more... you lose the convenience of just receiving the box and dropping it off at a local Fedex/Kinkos.

and Balto, aren't you the one who waited forever for yours to ship from Dynamism?

Is the 32 gigabyte SSD sufficient. I basically want to use the computer to trade stocks using Charles Schwab's Street Smart Pro. I will also have other financial sites downloaded into the computer. Web surfing will also be a large use but stock trading will be the main use.

If I also get the 160GB Hard Drive what determines what is downloaded on which drive? I assume the operating system is loaded on the SSD.

    Thanks for your advice,

    Eddie G.

Does anyone have any opinion on how the Panasonic R6 compares to the Sony?

For some it is, for others it is not. For me its not, thats why I went with the 100GB drive. It all depends on the amount of programs you plan to install and amount of data you plan to keep on it....

Keep in mind, after the OS is installed you will have much less space.... probably around 25GB of usable space.

No, it replaces the mini pci card that is in side the computer. You will have to open the tz to get to it and replace the card that is already there. If you are not an expert I suggest you do not go this route and get an N card via USB.

    Hello Everyone,

I am new to the forums, new to laptops actually. I have always been into the latest and greatest hardware, but I have finally decided to take the plunge and buy a laptop.

Of course I chose the Tz90, as it is the opposite of my desktop i.e.

    - small

    - very sleek

    - very portable

I have ordered the following spec from pricejapan

    Maker Sony TZ90
    Category Notebook
    Japan Model Name VGN-TZ90
    Premium carbon, Core 2 Duo U7600 1.20 GHz), 2G
    memory,
    160G HDD, 802.11 N wireless LAN,
English keyboard, light battery, finger-print sensor and
    security chip
    Voltage 100 ~ 240V all
    Price 207,800 Yen

    OPTIONS

    i) Option change to 32GB SSD + 160G HDD :69,000Yen
ii) change to standard battery : 5,000 Yen
    iii) [VGP-CKTZ2/B] Carrying Leather Case
    iv) [VGP-DDRW4] Sony DDRW4 Super-Multi Drive
    v) [VGP-BPS11] Lightweight battery pack
EXTRA vi) [VGP-CKTZ1/H] Carrying Case (4,980Y)
EXTRA vii) [VGP-CVT1/T] Carrying Cover (11,800Y)

I am so excited.... My only fear is that windows vista will not run smoothly for normal everyday tasks, and I would also like to run it with aero. Any comments from the proud owners?

I have also ordered a Merlin xu870 expresscard 3G+ card for internet on the move. I hope it does not spoil the look of the laptop too much.

Finally, I wired the money to pricejapan 5 days ago, and the only email I got was "We received the money, we a re procedding with your order" although I have heard nothing since then. I am quite worried as I have already sent them 3 mails since with no reply....

Relax... it will be with you shortly, I've spend $$$ with pricejapan before, not one bad thing to say about them, except their interesting way of working out cost.

They charge 5% fee... but this is on top of the complete total (item, insurance, shipping etc).... conics only charge 5% on the item alone.

Pricejapan shipping insurance is worked out by x 1.009 ... don't ask me how that works.... but it doesn't calculate out right, when compared to the actually shipping cost.

Then when I've purchased something twice of the same item (various time frames) and told them the shipping weight was not correct, they wouldn't budge.... weight difference was 2.5kg.

Don't get me wrong Pricejapan is great, but conics at the moment is working out cheaper, if only Brett would reply back

Thanks for the quick reply - I was starting to get a little paranoid!

Bottom line is, I am so looking forward to getting the laptop. I also ordered a Canon Hv20 HD camcorder, so I'm hoping they will make a good combination when I go on holiday.

Ofcourse I am not planning to do any video editing on the TZ (I don;t think it will handle that very well)

Although it would be nice to at least be able to record the video on the hard disk (160gb - not the SSD)

    Any thoughts?

I can tell you first hand that my experience with price japan was very pleasant. Their response time was usually very fast, but do keep in mind that you are not their only customer so sometimes, it takes a bit of time to answer your question.

I have the 32GB SSD drive and vista with aero on and it runs extremely smooth and fast on it with no noticeable lags.

I was expecting some kind of lag going from a T2500 2.0GHz on XP pro to a ULV 1.2GHz on vista, but the amount of time it takes to execute programs has been the same if not a bit faster, very surprised.
